Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Gollner.
Allison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began taking yoga classes around Miami Beach six years ago. I tried every studio there was, and greenmonkey was at the top of favorites list. I had a career in retail merchandising that kept me on the road for a few years, and moved me to DC for a bit. I was ready to come back to Miami, but my retail position had been made part-time, so I began exploring other options. The open management position for greenmonkey was brought to my attention by a friend, and I started the job just a couple months later. The only thing I regret is not making the move to a career in wellness sooner. My days “at work” are very similar to my days off–yoga classes, yoga events, and learning more about yoga!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was in a management position before, but it was nothing like running an entire studio. I had a good team when I started, but when you have excellent people, they eventually go on to bigger things for themselves. Right now, my team is so solid and I couldn’t fathom life at greenmonkey without them.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with greenmonkey yoga – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Word of mouth is huge for us, and our local community is incredibly supportive. We are known primarily as a Power Yoga studio, but there has been a shift over the last year or so towards different styles and practices. I like to think we offer a little bit of everything — Power, Vinyasa, Slow Flow, Restorative, Meditation, even yoga for kids! I’m most proud of our members who are proud to be *part* of greenmonkey. We’ve been around for over a decade, and I love when our members tell me about when they became part of the family.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are relaunching our teacher training program this spring with a focus on variety, on finding the style of yoga that suits you best. We have a strong group of lead teachers who will all contribute to the program and help lead students on their journey to becoming teachers themselves, or just deepening their practice.
