Alicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began photographing weddings while studying documentary photography at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. As my career progressed, I began working as a photojournalist for clients such as The New York Times and The Wall street journal and figured out that I could apply that same style to my wedding photography, capturing real moments and emotions as they unfold.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a smooth road. It helped to have assisted for renowned wedding photographers who shared their vast knowledge with me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Detour Weddings – what should we know?
I am the owner and main photographer at Detour Weddings. My business specializes in documentary style wedding photography where we aim to tell the story of a couple’s big day through candid moments. I am most proud that my work has allowed me to travel to places such as New York, California, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My style really stands outs because it is stylized but still manages to hit an emotional note by capturing real moments. My personality has helped me succeed in the business as well. I’m a bit quirky yet relaxed, fun, creative, ambitious, but know when to be a silent fly on the wall.
