Meet Alexa and Sophia Quirch of Krewe du Q in Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa and Sophia Quirch.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As cousins, we’ve grown up together and have become forever best friends. With Miami being so close to the Bahamas, both of our families have grown up traveling to the beautiful islands. At a very early age we learned how to dive, fish, wakeboard and pretty much do everything in our bikinis. Throughout the years, the Bahamas has become our second home and our favorite getaway.

Since we were young, we have always been obsessed with fashion and playing dress up. As we grew older, we knew we had to use that passion and mold it into something bigger. After college we both started full-time jobs in the Marketing and Fashion world to gain experience and, in part, getting a standard, 9 to 5 job was just what was expected of us to do.

After some time we realized we wanted more. We wanted to make something bigger and put our creative juices to work. After some glasses of wine, we decided why not now? A couple of days after we started our passion project. Having grown up in the Bahamas adventuring in our bikinis, we figured it would only be fit that we start our own bikini line that was inspired by all of our Bahamian travels and adventures.

With that said, we would meet after our full-time jobs and work all night building our brand and creating new unique designs. Soon after our side passion project grew into much more. We would get home late from our jobs and pack bathing suits, make calls to our manufacturer and create new designs. After many late nights, we decided to quit our full-time jobs and put our all into growing our brand that would soon become a reflection of both of us, Krewe du Q.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been a few unexpected bumps in the road. Both graduating with Business and Marketing degrees, we would have thought that we knew exactly what to expect but nothing really prepares you for the real thing.

Our biggest challenge was definitely a few months into starting Krewe du Q when we both had very demanding jobs with unpredictable and long hours. This made it extremely hard to stay on top of our business as we would have liked.

We faked many “bathroom breaks” and used our 10-minute lunch breaks to sneakily do whatever we could for Krewe du Q–from staying on top of our production company to ordering fabrics to brainstorming new styles.

We knew this was not sustainable and in order to make our business grow, we had to make a decision–quit our demanding but secure jobs or take a risk and put all of our work into making Krewe du Q grow. This was the easiest decision we ever had to answer. That was three months ago and now we could not be happier. Although it was not easy, we made it work somehow and we are still facing new challenges every day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Krewe du Q – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At Krewe du Q, we strive to create swimwear that makes women feel both comfortable and feminine. We want women everywhere to feel like they can do anything in our bikinis from diving, fishing, tanning too much more. Our flirty style and dreamy accents provide a comfortable fit to allow women to go on any adventure while looking beautiful doing so. Both of us live in skirts, dresses and pretty much are always wearing white, pink or floral outfits. We want our girlish playful style and personality to be reflected in anything and everything we design.

As mentioned many times, we have a big love for the Bahamas and continue to get inspiration from these beautiful islands which is why each and every bathing suit is named after a Bahamian island we have fallen in love with.

Being lovers of adventure and all things feminine, Krewe du Q is the ultimate extension of our world.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc?
Our family! Huge shoutout to our family. We come from a large Cuban family and everyone from our grandparents to our parents to our siblings have been our biggest cheerleaders from the very start. Being so proud of the family we came from, we partly named our company after our last name, which is where the “Q” comes from.

We thank our dads for all their business and finance advice, our grandmother Nana for the best daily fashion inspiration and all the girls in the fam for letting us count on you with any fashion and style advice.

We honestly don’t know if it would have been possible without our family’s encouraging words and continuous support. Krewe du Q is forever grateful.
