Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Barberena.
Alejandro, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working in construction at the age of 16 in 2003 for my father. I quickly learned as much as possible and decided to get my own license and open my own company. So, after I graduated from school and went to college for 2 years I decided it was time and in 2009 I opened my own company at the age of 22. I got a General Contractor License & Roofing License and we have been doing custom homes ever since. We mainly work in Golden Beach, Aventura, Bal Harbour & Miami Beach. But we have done work in Key West and up north in Port St. Luci.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started at the age of 22 and had already invested all my money in opening my company so it did not leave much budget for operating cost. At the same time the economy was on the way down and no one was doing construction anymore, I had just gotten my licenses and did not have much experience as a General Contractor or Roofer the experience I had from my father was mainly drywall because he is a drywall contractor, so I had to learn these trades on my own. When I got my first job I under bid and was about to lose money, but I found ways to make it work and was able to finish the job without making any profit. This was a bad time for me but it was one of the best learning experiences I ever had. It pushed me to become better and not have fear of failure.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory is going with my father to jobsites and seeing these amazing huge homes, and getting the feeling that I want to live in a house like that. My house growing up was small compared to these massive homes, so I felt this was an upgrade to me… I felt like the homes are being built for me… In my head I was the owner and I would visualize the final product before it was completed.
