Meet Alejandra Cangas of The Hungry Post in Miami Dade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Cangas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alejandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had a passion for food and a natural curiosity for researching and finding hidden gems to share with friends, and, since I am not a fan cooking, I pride myself in finding and enjoying the good cooks around me. As a Latina, the experience of sharing a meal with friends and family has always played a very important role in my life. Therefore, finding good restaurants and sharing the experience with friends became my passion.

The Hungry Post started by three hungry friends in Miami, Jose Loor, Andrea Becerra and myself, Alejandra Cangas. Our love for food was what brought us together and our passion for sharing our restaurant findings is what makes The Hungry Pots what it is today. It all started with an Instagram account featuring our best food pictures; then we launched a weekly newsletter that gets to your inbox right on time before the weekend, followed by our website, where you can now search and filter all of our Miami restaurant recommendations. The Hungry Post suddenly became the #1 food and beverage influencer in South Florida voted by the public on the Johnson and Whales Zest Awards.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. The Hungry Post started as a passion project and it has since grown to require full-time job team members, which none of us can actually fulfill. We all have corporate jobs and it has been difficult to keep up with the project’s growth. I have a strong passion for new ventures and entrepreneurship, but I also love my corporate job. It’s been hard to balance that corporate/ entrepreneurship life and take The Hungry Post to the next level. But then again, these are all good problems to have, right?
Last year, we decided to take The Hungry Post to NYC – BIG Challenge. Our main struggle is keeping up with the rate of restaurant openings and closings on a daily basis, and the number of restaurant recommendation competitors that are already established in the city. We still have big plans for the Big Apple and I strongly believe with having something special to offer, but you’ll have to wait and see! 😉

The Hungry Post – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Hungry Post is a restaurant recommendation platform that highlights all food happenings in Miami; from new restaurants and food festivals to culinary experiences and new chefs in town. We aren’t just about what’s in… we are about what’s in and good, and sometimes what’s good isn’t exactly in. So mainly, if what you want is to know good food and where to find it, nice to meet you.

We also host monthly events for our followers and subscribers in different restaurants around Miami. The objective is to bring people together over food (and get them off their social media feeds for a little), support the local new restaurants and give Miami entrepreneurs the opportunity to be discovered by the local food lovers. Our most popular event concepts are Blurry Brunch© – an unconventional brunch party that will make you drink lots of champagne, Sunset Party Happy Hours for those After Office events that everyone’s is always looking forward to on Fridays, Eats and Musiquita – our urban concept filled with food trucks and surprise musical performances and The Reduction – our most exclusive invite-only event series for the true food connoisseurs.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I love this questions! People who know me know that my favorite question for everything is “How does success look like?” – for every project, every negotiation, every relationship.

Success is always relative. I remember when I launched The Hungry Post events, and only friends and family would show up. I always said: “When you guys don’t come to the events anymore to show your support, and the event is still packed, I know I will have succeeded” – Three years later, my friends still go to the events because they love them! But the events would still be packed even if they weren’t there.
