Today we’d like to introduce you to 2 Sporty Shorty.
2 Sporty Shorty, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Retired City of Miami Police Officer. From cop to professional clown! Also a cast member of “Just The Funny” comedy Improv Troupe in Coral Way, Miami. I am also a character comedian currently developing a character 2 Sporty Shorty, “Comedy Rap King”. My goal is to turn the character into a television cartoon for all audiences. I write, produce and perform comedy songs under this stage name. I am also the executive producer for these songs currently under production. Who doesn’t like music and comedy? Mix both components together and how could you go wrong? Lol. My production team are brilliant musicians I assure you. The pot is boiling and when it explodes the world won’t see it coming. On any day of the week, you will find me at Criteria studios “Hit Factory” or Monosonico Studios Miami with co-producer Larry Coll, creating a catalog of tracks spitting them out like a factory conveyor belt. We are on fire!!! I have written over 300 songs for the character and hope to release the first album “Simple Life” on Jan 1st, 2019. 2 Sporty Shorty is the originator of the “Stand Up Comedy Concert. Sing, laugh and dance at the same time! For those of you who think cops are jerks who only write tickets, I must tell you, I was born into a musical family. I am the great nephew of Ed Townsend, singer, and songwriter. (Co-writer to Marvin Gaye’s smash hit “Let’s Get It On”) Cousin of David Townsend from 1980’s R & B group “Surface”… and that’s just to name a few). With the current hostile situation between the police and the Black Lives Matter movement, I think it will be a great thing for people to see that cops aren’t just robots and can be compassionate… and live in passion as professional artists. Is the world ready for 2 sporty shorty?
Has it been a smooth road?
Tough bumpy road. I was a co-owner of a professional music studio and record label for 10 years. Signed many wonderful artists. My production team unfortunately were party animals. Preferred to drive big flashy cars and pass out their business cards to pretty girls instead of work. Potheads… argued over money before money could even be generated. Our studio was also the hang out for many Miami Dolphin players. They would actually congregate downstairs almost daily (on the offseason) under our vocal booth yelling and screaming disrupting our business as they played the Madden NFL Football video game. (Strange thing to watch actual players “in the video game” also sitting on your couch playing that game, screaming toward the television at THEMSELVES in the game during and after for winning and losing the game. You can’t make these things up.) Our vocal booth floor wasn’t very sound proof so all the screaming would ruin vocal sessions for paying customers. My partners in business were too much of Dolphin fans to ask them to leave. Expensive and painful lesson to learn in life… we have “Engines” and “Anchors” all around us. People who propel us to achieve our highest potential, and people who hold us back. My advice for new artists… People are who they are. They can talk a good game but you can’t change them and they won’t change themselves. Find a professional team that is currently what you want them to be right now! NO DRUGS… NO BOOZE… NO ATTITUDES!!!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Shorty Tyme Entertainment story. Tell us more about the business.
My company was created to make the world “think” and “laugh”. A good comedian makes you laugh. A great comedian makes you think. I try to have as many positive messages in my song productions as possible, and no explicit lyrics. Explicit lyrics are an easy way to get a laugh. I try to be ingenious and creative as a professional songwriter. What am I proud of? I am most proud of the amount of songs I have been able to produce. Like I said, I have a catalog like Prince. Spent years of my life in seclusion perfecting my craft. Talent needs to have 10,000 hours of development. If an artist is not ready to put in the time, they will never be great. I think what sets me apart from other artists. “Detail” and “Originality”. To write comedy stories, the devil is in the details. I try to paint a picture for the listener. If I can get a kid on the other side of the world to put on their headphones, (someone who I will never meet) and give me three minutes of their time. Wow, that would be great. Forget their problems for just a few minutes. If I really do my job, they will press rewind and play it again! Music and laughter really is medicine for the soul. I specialize in both!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the future, I see the majority of musicians staying independent and rejecting major label deals. Modern technology no longer requires the distribution deal. Artists are rightfully tired of being ripped off by fast-talking predators selling big dreams. Artists now just need to be creative and unique. Stand out among other artists. Would Lady Gaga be so popular without originally wearing all those elaborate costumes? Doubt it. No disrespect to Lady Gaga. I am a fan, and I’m telling you she can blow… but many singers can blow. She brought the show. If I step out on stage and the audience doesn’t scream “wtf” the costume is not crazy enough.
