Today we’d like to introduce you to Wynette Green.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Wynette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always had a passion to help people my entire life. After working many years in business as an accountant, I noticed many of my friends and colleges were frequently coming to me with their hurts, pains, and challenges at work; so much so, that management begin to question why co-workers were always in my office. I also have always been a very spiritual person and begin asking questions such as what is my purpose? How can I contribute to society and change the lives of. If not one person, many people.
My search leads me to going back to school part-time to obtain my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I loved working with individuals, couples, and families and was determined to become licensed and transition full time into counseling as my career. It was at this point when I decided to go back to school again and continue to pursue my doctorate in family therapy at Nova Southeastern University.
With the assistance of family and school peers, I transitioned full time into counseling as a career at a local community service agency. After earning my license, I was promoted to management and immensely enjoyed counseling therapist-in-training on how to provide life-changing, effective therapy.
It was always my dream to own my own private practice and teach others. In 2016, I took a leap of faith and reached out to Dr. Kate Campbell, LMFT, to become a part of her team of therapists. This is where I begin my private practice in the Bayview, Fort Lauderdale area. Dr. Kate warmly welcomed me onto her team and gave me the opportunity to help others and change lives daily through my practice. Two years later, in 2018, I successfully earned and completed my doctorate degree in Family Therapy.
Today, I run a very successful private practice, ac Aspire LLC, with a special focus on helping couples have a happy, successful relationship, and empowering women to live their best life now. I also teach as an adjunct professor in the school of family therapy at Nova Southeastern University. It feels wonderful to have successfully achieved my goals and live the life of my dreams!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. As I grew, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, many of roles and relationships with others required change. For example, I had to work and attend school at the same time to assist in providing for my family. They had to endure my absence frequently as I physically worked and many days immediately had to go straight to the university to attend classes or an internship site to earn hours, after work. And, did not make it home until my kids were already in bed getting ready for school the next day.
I also had to take a major financial cut in pay to transition into my new career, moving from being an experienced accountant to an entry-level therapist. This largely impacted me and my family’s lifestyle but I was determined to make the changes and am eternally thankful to my family for supporting me along the way. My advice to young women just starting the journey is to stay very focused, determined, and to keep their eyes on their goals no matter what. It will be so worth and the sacrifices will pay off when you begin to live the life of your dreams!
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I specialize in working with couples and women in assisting them in living their best life now. What set me apart from other therapist is my approach and perspective that we all possess the power within ourselves to change any situation or circumstance that we do not like. I view challenges in a relationship as the individuals’ ways of relating as being problematic; versus the individuals themselves or the behaviors, they are displaying. If both persons are willing and ready to “work” on making the relationship stronger and bringing back their feelings when they first met, I can most definitely help them achieve this.
I am most proud of the couples who have allowed me in their family system and together, we have positively changed and saved their relationship and lives for the better! Also, I am very proud when I physically see and hear my clients transform no longer displaying the symptoms and feelings that brought them into therapy in the first place.
Who have you been inspired by?
I have three women who have significantly inspired me:
First, my mother, Ms. Jennie Parks Benson, as an immigrant from the Bahamas. She is a stellar! She came to the United States as a child, learned the culture, and worked very hard as a single mother of my younger brother, Kefer Benson, and I. She taught us to be hard workers, individuals with high values, respectful, and to always to do what we can to help others in need. She also instilled within us a strong, religious foundation; and exemplified everything she taught us throughout her daily life.
The second majorly inspirational women in my life is Dr. Tommie Boyd. I have known her for over nineteen years and she has been my professional mentor from the moment I met her. She initially was my adjunct teacher in a class while earning my master’s degree at St. Thomas University; and largely inspired me towards desiring my doctorate. I always admired her strength and amazingly calm, warm domineer. Ironically much of this, she did not know until she became my Chair on my dissertation committee. With her wisdom, knowledge and endless support, she steers, headed me and encouraged me along the way as I defended my dissertation.
Thirdly, another amazing woman who has changed my life and positively impacted my journey forever is Dr. Kate Campbell. I have known Dr. Kate for over three years. She is truly my mentor and I highly look up to her. She actually selected me for this interview. From the first day I met her (which she probably, too, also may not remember) was at a meeting where she was the leader of our local family therapy association (AAMFT) chapter, Dr. Kate is one of the most successful individuals who not only has studied how to run and have a successful, private practice but she lives it.
Today she runs a very successful group practice, Bayview Therapy, which I’m honored to be a part of, and it’s just one of her very successful businesses. I’m so inspired by Dr. Kate not only because of her business success but her humbleness, openness and willingness to share it with others. She has provided me with priceless, private practice tips and guidance for free. She is always makes herself available for her team; and encourages each and every one of us to be our best!
