Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Divine.
Hi DJ Divine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My background, which exposed me to different genres of music. My mother is German born and my father is African American. When I was younger, my parents would always have house parties which exposed me to the musical selections of Johnnie Taylor and The O’ Jays. Even though I was not allowed to be around the cigarette smoke and flowing cocktails, the music for me was influential. My neighborhood played a huge role in my love for music as it was predominantly Caribbean. My peers and I were heavily into reggae and artists such as Bounty Killa, Buju Banton and Beenie Man were in heavy rotation. The love of reggae music inserted me in my local record shops purchasing the latest vinyl. Securing an old record player that my parents were planning to throw away sparked an interest in DJing. After I graduated High School, my aspirations of a musical career were placed to the side as I gave birth to two beautiful daughters. I had a brief encounter interning for the legendary hip hop artist, Prince Markie Dee (RIP) which fueled my desire to pursue radio and DJing. Once my daughters were of a certain age, my drive to DJ was born again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have certainly been challenges along the way however they were blessings that helped me advance my craft. Most DJs can relate to the technical issues that may occur when performing a set but they are no longer obstacles when you become familiar with any situations that may arise.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a DJ and I love what I do. There is a special feeling to being able to control a crowd through music. I am known for my genuine smile and the positive energy that I bring to every event I curate. I enjoy being able to make someone’s day better with my art and talent. I am proud of how far I have come and the people that have supported me along the way.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is doing something that you enjoy and being compensated for it. Like my mom would always say, when you enjoy what you do, it’s no longer work.
