Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Vila.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about fashion. As a little girl, I was always fascinated with clothing, accessories- basically anything I could find. After years of working in retail and helping my friends style their wardrobes, I decided to start a blog, La Vida Vila. The name came as a way to incorporate my Hispanic roots and showcase my life. I felt there was a void in the industry for blogs that focused on affordable fashion. I work to mix in a few high-end pieces, but I focus on providing affordable outfit options for the everyday gal.
I began blogging about 4 years ago through a separate Instagram account. After launching my website, I realized there was something “off” with running both a personal and business Instagram account. Towards the end of 2017, I made the official switch to combine both my business and personal account. I wanted my followers to feel that they knew me on a personal level.
Currently, I am running my account mostly through my Instagram with my website under re-construction. I will continue to present women (and men!) the affordable inspiration to pursue a passion while balancing a full-time job. I have a long way to go and I cannot wait for the journey!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the world of blogging, especially in a city like Miami, there is so much competition. It’s hard not to compare your progress with others. I’ve found myself gauging my progress by comparing myself to others, it can be hard not to.
However, support other bloggers and use their content as inspiration. I can truly say that my biggest source of inspiration comes from the community of bloggers. As cheesy as it may sound, my best advice is to remain authentic. It can be easy to fall into a “mold” of what you think you should be doing- just be yourself.
Also, always keep your eye on trends, but know which of them to ignore. Not every single style is going to look great on your body type or mix well with your personal wardrobe and that’s okay!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with La Vida Vila Blog – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I strive to strike a balance between my blog and my “regular” job. I work in the NBA so there is never a dull moment in the sports industry.
Working in sports has helped build who I am personally while contributing to my personality as a brand- I’m always on the go! It drives my friends, family and boyfriend crazy that I plan my days down to the hour. It helps me balance my work and days off to make sure I make the most of my time.
I’m most known for my affordable fashion options. There is no need to compromise quality to find an affordable piece. Thrift shopping is just one way to find unique pieces to update your current wardrobe.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Networking is definitely an amazing way to meet people within the industry, don’t be shy- many of the bloggers you look up to were once in your exact place.
Don’t be afraid to market your own brand. This is something I struggled with at first. I didn’t want to seem pushy or overbearing so I would refrain from talking about my blog! I have recently realized that I was missing out on so many opportunities that way.
Once you realize that you are your own best marketer, the possibilities are endless.
