Inspiring Conversations with Kevin Gray of KGD Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Gray.

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I studied University of Texas, Austin, TX and Parsons School of Design NYC. In summer of 1978, I transferred to Parson Abroad and graduated Paris, France. I worked on design jobs in the fashion industry in Paris and with Jim Sander, Wolfgang Joop in Germany.

For ten years, I designed lamps and furniture in Paris and Milan and won numerous awards and four of my lamps were catalogued and exhibited in 1988 “100 Lamps” at Miami Art Museum with Wolfsonain Museum.

In the early 90’s I gutted, rebuilt and furnished the penthouse for Wolfgang Joop on Sutton Place, NYC and the Penthouse on Avenue Princess Grace, Monte-Carlo, Monaco.

I moved back to the States and settled in Miami in 1997 to design the Flagship store for Wolfgang Joop, South Beach, at 1455 Ocean Drive, which opened in 1999.

I’ve been based in Miami since then and work in the Florida Keys, Miami, Ft-Lauderdale and Palm Beach.

I also work Washington DC, NYC, The Hamptons and Rhode Island.

I’m passionate about my work and love construction, renovations and interior design for my clients, who I work continuously on all their homes or apartments.

My work is featured in numerous books and magazine publications, and have done about 8 TV which showcased my remodels and decorations.

I currently serve on the Advisory Board of the WOLFSONIAN Museum, Miami Beach, and travel to Europe each year from my lamp production in Milan and Paris, and the Wolfsonaina Museum based in Genoa Italy

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Home design is challenge, but I love challenges! We shipped all the case goods for the Wolfgang Joop Flagship store from Germany and had customs issues and local crews here to install, and finalize all permits and fire inspections to open the Joop Store. I studied French in Paris. I learned German to work in Hamburg and Berlin and picked up Italian in Milano and Spanish here in Miami…

I even was a Fashion Model in early 80’s to legally work and reside in France, and did TV commercials, Runway and print.

As you know, we’re big fans of KGD Interiors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My work known for being very hands on and doing the unexpected. For 15 years, I worked in Europe, so I know an array of styles from antique to modern design., and showrooms and mills across Europe.

I love to mix the cutting-edge Modern with Vintage / Antiques that I find in Paris Flea market or the Berlin and Milano Antique Districts.

Most of my interiors have Murano Glass chandeliers, sconce or accessories, and a firm believer that Interiors should be unique and have personality!

I’m known for high-end home renovations and Interior Design that are timeless, with no need to renovate after 20 years.

How do you think about luck?
This business is full of challenges and I’ve been fortunate, to always be honorable and correct whatever happens! This has kept my clients base loyal and we’re all friends and continue to be rewarded with work and we do art events and dinners together.
