Hidden Gems: Meet Michelle Von Der Heyde of MindRefined

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Von Der Heyde.

Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in began in 2005 when I migrated from Venezuela to Miami. I started my career at the University of Miami, building a foundation from the ground up. I worked my way from a Nursing Assistant to a Registered Nurse, and eventually became a Family Nurse Practitioner and later an Oncology Nurse Practitioner. Caring for patients & families taught me that mental health is often an overlooked core pillar of health.

I quickly recognized a significant shortage in psychiatric care, which led me to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). My goal at this point was to move beyond the traditional 15-minute medication check. I wanted to be a detective for my patients, investigating the “why” behind their suffering. For this reason, I founded MindRefined, to bridge the gap between high-level clinical expertise and a holistic nursing philosophy.

MindRefined is a practice that blends high-level clinical expertise with a high-tech, high-touch philosophy. We specialize in Functional Psychiatry utilizing genomic insights and wearable data to provide precision-based care.

Today, my professional life is a dynamic blend of data and dialogue. I lead a dedicated village of staff to ensure we provide elite, bilingual care that treats every patient as a unique biological story rather than just a diagnosis.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly wasn’t (currently isn’t) without its hurdles. Transitioning from a clinical expert to a business owner in Miami’s fast-paced environment required a complete shift in mindset.

1. The greatest struggle was the daily balancing act between my nursing heart and the logistical realities of business. I had to learn that building a profitable model, was the only way to keep the doors open for the long haul to continue serving my patients.

2. Ensuring the advanced technology will enhanced, rather than replaced, the human connection. While we use AI-enhanced support and wearable integration to monitor physiological stress, I had to ensure these tools didn’t turn my patients into just data points. Staying “high-touch” means using that data to have deeper, more meaningful dialogues during our consultations.

4. I faced the challenge of breaking the 15-minute medication management mold that dominates the industry. Designing a new infrastructure from scratch was necessary to provide the deep-dive, “forensic analysis” that my patients deserve.

One of the most valuable experiences along the way, was having the guidance of the Nurse Practitioner Entrepreneurship Program (NPEP), supported by Duke Health and the J&J Foundation, with their support I found the blueprint to build a new kind of practice. I learned that every struggles has been a bridge to a better standard of care.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
MindRefined is a next-generation psychiatric practice located in Miami, dedicated to revolutionizing mental healthcare through a “high-tech, high-touch” model. We provide a compassionate, inclusive, and innovative environment that addresses the critical gaps in today’s healthcare landscape.

What we do differently:
* Comprehensive Care: We offer whole-person evaluations that combine supportive therapy with lifestyle coaching.
* Functional & Precision Analysis: We look at the “why” behind suffering, analyzing genetics, nutritional, inflammatory, and metabolic factors, asking questions like, “How is your brain, endocrine or gut health affecting your mood?”.
* Specialized Psycho-Oncology: We provide expert care for individuals and families navigating the unique mental health challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

Unlike traditional clinics or large telehealth platforms that prioritize scale over quality, MindRefined integrates Precision Care into every patient interaction:
* Genomic Insights: We use pharmacogenomic (DNA) testing to create personalized medication plans, significantly reducing trial-and-error.
* Wearable Integration: We incorporate data from smart devices to objectively monitor sleep, activity, and physiological stress markers.
* Bilingual Accessibility: As a bilingual (English/Spanish) practice, we are positioned to serve the diverse heart of the Florida community.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of our sustainable heart, the fact that we have built a data-driven system that never loses its human soul. We are known for our “forensic analysis” of cases, we don’t just see a diagnosis, we see a unique biological story.

MindRefined is not just a clinic, it is a partner in your health. Whether you are a busy professional, a student, or a family member facing a life-altering medical diagnosis, we offer a modern, convenient, and deeply personalized path to wellness. Our goal is to provide elite-level, tech-integrated care that treats you as an individual, not a number.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting a practice is as much about personal growth as it is about clinical expertise. If I could go back to the beginning, here are the key pieces of advice I would give to any aspiring healthcare entrepreneur:

1. Embrace the “Sustainable Heart”: As clinicians, we often feel that focusing on “business” detracts from our mission of caring. However, the most important lesson I learned is that a sustainable business model is what allows you to keep your doors open for the long haul. You must balance your nursing heart with the logistics of running a practice, revenue follows a job well done, but you need the infrastructure to support that success.

2. Lead Your Village: You cannot do this work alone. Early on, focus on learning to lead a village, by recruiting a dedicated team whose goals align perfectly with your mission. When your team feels as deeply about the mission as you do, they become the support system that allows you to provide the best care for your patients.

3. Find the Gaps in Care: Don’t just build another clinic, look at your community and ask, “Who is being left behind?. For MindRefined, identifying the missing support for the patient &families facing a cancer diagnosis led to our specialized Psycho-Oncology pillar. Use strategic tools to find those unmet needs, that is where your practice will find its true purpose and competitive advantage.

4. Tech Should Serve the Touch: In a world moving toward automation, remember that patients are craving a partner in their health, not just a prescription. Use technology, like AI, genomics, or wearables to handle the paperwork and objective monitoring. This frees you to give your patients 100% of your presence when it matters most.

5. Walk the Path Yourself: It is easy to get lost in the data and dialogue of a professional day. My non-negotiable advice is to maintain your own foundation of wellness. Whether it is yoga, meditation, or a walk in nature, you cannot ask your patients to prioritize their health if you aren’t willing to walk that path yourself.
