Hidden Gems: Meet Matt Sweetwood of Phoenix Molecular

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Matt Sweetwood.

Matt Sweetwood

Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Matt Sweetwood, and my journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From raising five children as a single dad to growing a business from $1 million to $100 million in the competitive electronics industry, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges and triumphs.

As a single dad, I had to learn the ropes of parenting quickly. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to raise my children to successful adulthood, instilling in them the values and resilience that have served me well in my own life.

In the business world, I faced numerous obstacles, but I never gave up. I took a company from $1 million to $100 million, a feat that required dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to adapt to changing market conditions.

Today, I’m the President of Phoenix Molecular, a cutting-edge infectious disease laboratory dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare through precision PCR-based testing. This role allows me to combine my entrepreneurial spirit with my passion for improving public health.

As Co-Founder of Greener Process Systems Inc., I’m at the forefront of environmental innovation. Greener’s patented and revolutionary modular system captures maritime and industrial emissions and CO2, reducing pollution from docked oceangoing ships and industrial facilities. The company’s hope is to improve health conditions for millions and reduce the impact of emissions on the environment.

In addition to my business ventures, I’m an internationally known professional speaker, author, coach, and photographer. I’ve written a #1 bestselling book, “Leader of the Pack,” which chronicles my journey as a single dad and offers insights into leadership and personal growth.

Throughout my life, I’ve faced adversity and embraced opportunity. My story is one of transformation and inspiration, and I hope to continue making a positive impact on the world through my work in business, environmental innovation, and personal growth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road? If not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
Raising five children, ages 18 months to 8 years old, on my own after their mother left us for good was a monumental task. Simultaneously, I had to re-invent a highly competitive electronics business not once but twice. This period of my life was incredibly challenging, but it taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance.

After exiting the electronics business, I faced the daunting task of starting from scratch in my 50s.

Despite the difficulty, I was determined to re-invent myself. It was during this time that I became involved with two groundbreaking companies: one focused on environmental innovation and the other on medical technology. Both companies are at the forefront of their respective industries, thanks to their innovative solutions.

We’ve been impressed with Phoenix Molecular, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart?

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
My approach to risk-taking is a calculated one, based on the urgency of the need, the required speed, and the potential reward in comparison to the worst possible outcome. As a former mathematics graduate student from the University of Pennsylvania, I tend to view business risks in a mathematical way.

In the past, when my electronics business was struggling, I decided to take a calculated risk and opened a retail store when many others were closing. I had a new idea for running the store, and within a few years, it became one of the largest and most successful in the region.

There was another instance when I had the opportunity to sell a new product to a very large chain store. It could have propelled us to the big leagues. However, the store wanted a several million-dollar order on consignment as a trial.

Despite the potential for substantial profit, I passed on the sale because the risk of loss could have bankrupted us. Given that we already had a successful business, the potential profit didn’t justify the risk.
