Today we’d like to introduce you to James R. Haj.
Hi James R., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Throughout my life, I’ve been privileged to be able to champion the academic success of all children, embracing and supporting every ability. My journey began as the principal of my alma mater, Southwest Miami High School, where I led the school to academic excellence. We went from a “D” to an “A” school during my time there. I’ve served as administrative director for Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) South and Central regions and assistant superintendent of Labor Relations and Compensation at M-DCPS. My experience as a principal and assistant superintendent have significantly shaped the leader I am today as president & CEO of The Children’s Trust; a position I’ve had the pleasure of holding since 2016.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As with all of us, the journey is not without its challenges but that is for the good since it is through the struggles that we grow. In my early days as principal of Southwest Miami High School, transforming the school from a “D” to an “A” was a monumental task that required not only strategic planning but also a significant cultural shift among staff and students. Additionally, navigating the complexities of administrative roles within Miami-Dade County Public Schools presented its own set of obstacles, particularly in labor relations and compensation. As the president & CEO of The Children’s Trust, I’ve faced numerous challenges in ensuring sustainable funding and maintaining the high standards of our programs amidst changing economic conditions. Each of these experiences, however, has contributed to my growth and resilience as a leader, enabling me to better serve the children and families of Miami-Dade County.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade County . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum in 2002 and reauthorized with 86% voter approval in 2008. Our mission is to plan, advocate for and fund strategic investments to improve quality of life for children and families in Miami-Dade County. The Trust has been a part of the community for over 22 years, funding high-quality programs and services, from child care to summer and after-school programs. The Trust serves as a helping hand for parents and caregivers dedicated to nurturing greatness in every child from birth to adulthood, while also keeping our economy strong by supporting quality early learning and other programs that allow parents to work while their children are cared for.
How do you define success?
Success, to me, is measured by the impact we have on the lives of others and the legacy we leave behind. In my professional life, it is about creating opportunities and systems that enable children and families to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. It is ensuring that every child has access to the resources, education, and support they need to reach their full potential.
Success is not about accolades or personal achievements; it is about lifting others, fostering resilience, and building a community that values the well-being of all its members. At The Children’s Trust, I am most fulfilled when I see the tangible outcomes of our efforts—whether it is a child excelling in school because of quality after-school programs, a parent successfully balancing work thanks to reliable child care, or a family finding hope through the services we provide.
Ultimately, success is about making a difference. It is about striving each day to leave the world a little better than we found it and inspiring others to do the same. For me, that is the true marker of a life and career well-lived.
