Today we’d like to introduce you to Maximo Caminero
Hi maximo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a plastic artist and writer. As an artist, I have been practicing for more than 40 years. as a writer 30.
In Miami, he founded the Dominican Cultural House in 1993, in which we promoted painters, writers, and musicians from all over Latin America. Then I moved, in 2017, to the city of West Palm Beach, where I have my workshop where I create my pictorial work, and we do a weekly exhibition of an unknown or well-established artist, free of charge, since my personal opinion is that of motivating without judging while we identify the love for culture.
With this, I understand that I help many creators who have never had the opportunity to exhibit. It happened to me in my beginnings and it was very difficult to achieve a position in which I would be considered a serious and committed artist. the will tends to break if one does not believe in what one does.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every beginning is hard since it requires discipline and love for your passions. You knock on 20 doors, and one opens a little, and you have to push it to make it open completely. Arriving in Miami without knowing anyone is not easy. I had to work as a waiter, as a valet parking, and many worthy jobs that would allow me to continue in my dream. and the profession of creator is not a safe profession; it requires connections, personality, and talent. If you only have the last one, they will probably recognize you when you are in the afterlife…
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an artist, I think that my creations are connections with other dimensions. My work is basically abstract, surreal, and, in some cases, somewhat earthly. It is not art, since I am clear that what everyone calls art, specifically when it is abstract, has no way of being explained; it is a language from another world that we are prohibited from knowing due to our human condition. We are receivers who show the degree of spirituality achieved through the work, which can only be “appreciated” by the observer who reaches through his subconscious the same dimension as the author. He doesn’t understand it either, but “something” touches his conscience.
On the writer’s side, it is “something different,” since although at a certain moment I feel that something takes over me and the ideas flow, one is writing in a known language, and I also try to write as simple, clear, and objective as I can. The topics are anecdotal, political, historical, and philosophical, among others.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Well, precisely because I don’t know the message of my work. Many people think that as a creator, “you have to know what you’re doing,” but that’s not the case. Artists, as the Brazilian writer Ferreira Güllar implied when he said “art exists because life is not enough,” are the last frontier of the human mind. We reach the edge of the mystery of life, trying to find meaning in the “why” of human existence. We do not know why we are here, where we come from, or where we are going, as the Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario said. So associating “art” as the connection that “solves” that riddle surprises many, although we still cannot decipher life, but at least we show the messages.
