Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfredo Lomelí.
Hi Alfredo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Mexican-American journalist, television host and actor with over ten years as a professional in Television, Radio and Film. My family moved to the US when I was six years old and we lived through the well-known struggles of every immigrant family with low resources, though my parents made sure we never lacked food, shelter and heat in the winter. A very shy and introverted kid, I found myself through middle school sports and plays. In High School, I started acting in commercials and singing in the choir, which led to me receiving a scholarship for Vocal performance at UTSA. Though the classical music lifestyle ended up not being a passion of mine, I continued acting in independent films and commercials and studied Radio/TV/Film at San Antonio Community College.
In 2008, I represented San Antonio in the wildly popular singing reality show, Objetivo Fama which auditioned thousands across the country, only to select 20. Though I didn’t win, it opened up doors in TV that I didn’t have before. My resume in television includes hosting and producing the five times Lone Star Emmy winning Univision magazine show ‘Tu Estilo’ based in San Antonio, TX and was also a national correspondent for Univision’s national morning show ‘Despierta America’. I hosted the MLB Network show produced for DAZN, “ChangeUp” as well as several ESPN and ESPN International shows including Sportscenter on Snapchat, #RedesESPN, NBA Tonight and live reports from the world’s greatest sporting events such as the NBA Finals, X Games, World Series, and Super Bowl LIII. Alfredo is a rising star at Telemundo and Telemundo Deportes, contributing daily on En Casa Con Telemundo and hosting LatinX Now and Se Habla NFL as well as covering key Telemundo events such as the Latin American Music Awards, the Latin Billboards and Super Bowl.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, although I’ve always felt a connection with the universe which has allowed me to maintain a level of peace which I’m grateful for. The struggles I’ve faced include discrimination for being Mexican and a part of the LGBTQ community. Also, the entertainment industry is one that is ever-evolving, so saying goodbye to what no longer served me and daring to take on new challenges was always a tedious, but necessary and very spiritual road.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for my versatility in the entertainment industry. I call myself a sports journalist because I’ve worked for the title, covering the world’s biggest events. I call myself an actor, because I turned down the biggest paycheck of my life–up until that point–in 2015 to move to NYC and study at the world-renown William Esper Studio. I call myself a producer because I studied Radio/TV/Film in college and have continued to produce content ever since. I cover pop culture and entertainment because it’s what I saturate myself in on the daily. I love learning and genuinely believe that versatility is key in being a good entertainer and professional. My connection with the camera, guests, and crew is something I cherish and will continue to try and grow.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite books are anything by TJ Klune, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Paulo Coehlo, and Brene Brown. My favorite podcast is the Dan Savage Lovecast and Eckhart Tolle: Essential Teachings.
