Conversations with Mirko Finale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mirko Finale.

Hi Mirko, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in Italy, in Naples, at a very young age, driven more by instinct than by a clear plan. Coming from a place where it’s not always easy to break out, I developed ambition early — I knew since I was around 16 that I wanted more for myself, and that I was willing to work for it.

I didn’t come from a traditional or privileged path in fashion, so everything I’ve built came through curiosity, discipline, and a strong inner vision.

From the beginning, I’ve always been willing to take risks and embrace challenges. I believe that growth only happens when you step into the unknown. The early years, the “gavetta” , were fundamental for me. They taught me resilience, humility, and the value of truly earning your place.

Over time, I moved from smaller environments into global luxury houses, working across cities like Rome, Paris, and New York. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with and learn from some of the greatest minds in fashion, which has deeply shaped my approach and understanding of the industry. Each step required leaving something behind and starting again, strengthening both my perspective and my character.

What has guided me throughout is not just design, but a sensitivity to balance aesthetics, function, and identity. I’ve always been interested in creating products that feel effortless yet intentional, something that doesn’t need to shout to be recognized.

Today, I continue to work internationally as a design director, developing footwear with a focus on refined simplicity and long-term relevance. My path has never been linear, but it’s been consistent in one thing: believing in my vision, trusting the process, and staying true to myself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, it has been anything but a smooth road.

I’ve gone through very challenging moments along the way, both professionally and personally. The fashion industry, especially from a design perspective, is extremely demanding. You’re constantly working under pressure, tight timelines, continuous approvals, and high expectations.

At the same time, it’s a deeply creative field where you’re expressing a part of yourself. That also means being constantly exposed to judgment, which is not always easy to navigate.

What made the difference for me is that I never stopped believing in my abilities. Even in the most difficult moments, I stayed grounded in my vision and kept moving forward. Those challenges, in the end, became an essential part of my growth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the core of my work, I still rely on something very simple: a pen, a sheet of paper, and my instinct. I combine creativity with experience to create products that are meant to last over time, not just visually, but in how people connect with them.

I specialize in footwear design, with a focus on refined, timeless silhouettes that balance innovation and wearability. I’ve always been drawn to a kind of quiet design, pieces that don’t need to shout, but still leave a strong impression.

What I’m most proud of is seeing people still wearing my designs years after their release. For me, that’s the real validation when something continues to live beyond its moment.

A meaningful moment for me was when a friend sent me a photo of the Archlight sneaker I designed for Louis Vuitton, now exhibited in their museum alongside works from influential designers like Virgil Abloh. It reminded me that design, when done with intention, can go beyond product and become part of a larger cultural story.

What sets me apart is probably this balance between intuition, discipline, and the ability to stay true to my vision while adapting to different brands, markets, and moments in time.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
It really depends on the structure of the company and the team in place.

In most cases, I integrate into existing design teams and work collaboratively, bringing my experience and perspective as a design director. My role is to guide the vision, refine ideas, and ensure the product reaches a strong and coherent identity.

I’m very open to listening, I value the team’s intuition and input, and I see collaboration as an essential part of the creative process. At the same time, I take responsibility for shaping and elevating those ideas when needed, based on experience and direction.

I’m not someone who needs to do everything alone, although I’m also comfortable working independently when the project requires it.

For the past four years, I’ve been working as a freelance design director, collaborating with brands such as Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, CELINE and most recently, I’ve had the honor of designing a shoe for an international team that will debut in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. I can’t say with what brand just yet, I will announce very soon, but I will say, this is a very special project with a team I have the upmost respect for.

I enjoy helping brands build and strengthen their footwear identity.

In general, people enjoy working with me because I bring clarity, respect, and a strong sense of direction to the process.
