Conversations with Asli Ozok

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Asli Ozok.

Asli Ozok

Asli, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My aspiration has always been to become an international artist. It all began in my grandfather’s workshop during my childhood. He was my first mentor, deeply immersed in art and education. He was a founding professor at Tarsus American, TED, authored numerous books on painting and technical drawing, and shared his wisdom at institutions and fine art universities like Gazi and the Academy. Growing up in his studio, I found painting to be an essential part of my existence.

My first major destination was New York. From there, my path led me to Spain, where I spent many years having exhibitions across Europe. Along the way, I participated in exhibitions, symposiums, and biennials in diverse locales such as Korea, Tokyo, Singapore, and the Philippines, New York and London always connecting with foreign collectors and galleries. For me, being an artist lies in creating art and the connections shared along the way.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an artist, my existence is deeply rooted in creativity. I was born on this path, and my daily life revolves around my artistic process. Every artist has unique experiences, both positive and negative, throughout their career and life. I don’t subscribe to the notion that artists must suffer or be overly ambitious to succeed.

Instead, I believe in a natural flow where creativity thrives. Struggles and emotional upsets do not hinder artistic work; they are part of the journey. No one can make or take away one’s creativity, as it’s an inherent part of being an artist. In essence, artistic success is not defined by hardship but by embracing the natural flow of creativity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
As a versatile contemporary artist specializing in figure-based creations across media—painting, sculpting, and more—my distinctive visual language is a signature element throughout my ever-evolving body of work.

My creative journey mirrors my transformation; thus, change isn’t feared but embraced as part of my authentic artistic identity. Post-pandemic, my recent pieces lean towards Surrealism and Metaphysics within bronzes, paintings, and drawings, reflecting our shared global experience. If future expressions demand alternative materials or techniques, they, too, shall be explored without hesitation.

Being internationally traveled has enriched my understanding of diverse cultures, further informing and enhancing my artwork. In summary, each piece remains identifiable due to their common origin rooted deeply in self-expression and continuous exploration.

By combining classical training with innovative approaches honed during travels around the world, every creation becomes not only a testament to technical skill but also a reflection of humanity itself – constantly growing, adapting, questioning, discovering. This fluid approach ensures no two bodies of work resemble each other entirely despite sharing similar undercurrents stemming directly from my innermost thoughts and emotions.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I enjoy spending time with people and talking, but sometimes I prefer being alone to draw endlessly. Growing up in a family passionate about art and school helped shape who I am now because they encouraged my creativity when I was young.

My personality combines many sides: chatty times mixed with peaceful ones focused solely on creating. Learning more keeps me curious, whether diving into history or following what happens worldwide right now. All parts come together nicely, making room for endless opportunities ahead.
