Conversations with Alejandra Oraa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Oraa.

Hi Alejandra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in journalism driven by curiosity and a deep desire to understand people and the world around me. I’m originally from Venezuela, and from very early on I knew I wanted to tell stories that mattered and that humanized.

That path eventually led me to CNN en Español, where I spent 14 years as an anchor and journalist. During that time, I had the privilege of covering everything from breaking news to in-depth interviews with world leaders, artists, and changemakers. It shaped me not only as a communicator, but as someone who understands the responsibility that comes with informing millions of people every day.

Over time, my perspective evolved. I began to feel that while telling difficult stories is essential, there was also space, and a need, to highlight what’s working. The innovation, the resilience, the stories that often don’t make headlines but define who we are as a region.

That’s what led me to create La Ruta, a docuseries focused on telling the positive, impactful stories of Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, I produce and host the show, which airs on platforms like History Channel en Español, NTN24, and others, reaching millions of viewers across the region.

At this stage in my career, I see myself not just as a journalist, but as a storyteller and builder. Someone who is creating platforms, connecting narratives, and helping reshape how we see our countries and ourselves.

And I think I’m just getting started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. It’s been a beautiful journey, but definitely not a smooth one.

Starting out as a young journalist, especially as a Latina, came with its own set of challenges. You’re trying to prove yourself constantly, to earn credibility in rooms where you’re often the youngest, the only woman, or the only one with your background. That takes resilience.

During my years at CNN en Español, the pace was intense. News doesn’t wait, and there’s a real emotional weight that comes with covering difficult stories day after day. You learn to be strong on camera, even when what you’re reporting affects you or even when you are in a toxic environment.

But one of the biggest challenges came later, when I decided to step out of that stability and build something of my own. Creating La Ruta meant starting from scratch.

I’ve also had to redefine myself more than once. Moving from anchor to entrepreneur and creator forces you to get comfortable with uncertainty, to trust your instincts, and to keep going even when things aren’t clear yet.

But every challenge has shaped me. If anything, the road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been meaningful. And I wouldn’t change that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a journalist, storyteller, and producer. For many years, I was known primarily as an anchor at CNN en Español, where I covered everything from breaking news to in-depth interviews with global leaders and cultural icons. That experience shaped my foundation. It taught me rigor, clarity, and the responsibility that comes with informing people.

Today, my work has evolved. I run my own production, where we develop and produce all types of content centered on stories that matter. From documentaries and docuseries to branded integrations and social media storytelling, we focus on creating narratives that are both meaningful and impactful, always with a strong editorial perspective.

I’m also the creator and host of La Ruta, a docuseries that highlights the stories that are often overlooked in Latin America. The innovation, the culture, the people who are building and transforming their countries in powerful ways.

What I specialize in is storytelling with depth and perspective. I’ve always been able to move between hard news and more human, narrative-driven content, and I think that range is a big part of what defines me. I understand how to communicate complex issues, but also how to connect emotionally with an audience.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just tell stories, I help shape how they’re told. I come from a background of covering crisis, but I’ve chosen to also focus on possibility. I believe that telling constructive, forward-looking stories is also a form of journalism. And doing that with credibility, access, and a strong narrative voice is where I believe my work stands out.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think our industry is at one of the most important inflection points we’ve ever seen. The next 5 to 10 years won’t just be an evolution, it’s a full transformation of how stories are created, distributed, and consumed.

The biggest shift, without a doubt, is artificial intelligence. It’s already changing how content is produced, from research to editing to distribution, and it’s only accelerating. AI is making production faster and more accessible, but it’s also flooding the ecosystem with content. 
So the real challenge won’t be creating content, it will be standing out. Quality, voice, and credibility are going to matter more than ever.

At the same time, we’re seeing a massive shift in who controls attention. Traditional media no longer owns distribution. Platforms, algorithms, and creators do. 
Social video, short-form content, and creator-led storytelling are becoming the center of gravity in media, competing directly with television and even streaming platforms. 

Another big trend is fragmentation. Audiences are no longer in one place. People are consuming content across multiple platforms, formats, and devices, often at the same time. 
That means storytelling has to become more flexible. It’s not just about one format anymore, it’s about building narratives that can live everywhere, from long-form documentaries to short-form social content.
