Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Ferguson.
Hi Kim, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Kim and I am a ceramic artist. I first tried ceramics in college as a fluke and found a lot of joy in creating something from a ball of clay. Despite declaring an Art minor, I still felt very much like an outsider to that world. I participated in studio showing and even won a few awards, but ceramics was never my primary focus. Once college was over, I never considered art as a legitimate career option and ceramics became fell away. It wasn’t until a few years late that I picked up a ball of clay again. It was during a low point in my personal that I decided to take a refresher class at a local studio in Fort Lauderdale. All it took was one session at the wheel and I was able to throw all of my life’s chaos into something creative again. I channeled all of my energies into completing ideas I had sketched years before but was too afraid or insecure to complete. Others who saw the results connected with the pieces and soon after my brand Khaos Creates was born. Today my ceramics brand is all about tapping into your natural energy to transform yourself and those around you. Each Khaos Creates piece is inspired by transformative energy and encourages you to authentically love all your parts; magical and otherwise.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running an art business is anything but smooth sailing. The pandemic has presented many production and delivery challenges that impact accessing the customers that I would want to. Physical art shows are almost a thing of the past and much of my world has gone digital. However, deciding to pursue an artistic career is for the brave and unyielding and I am definitely both! Embracing the internet as a major tool for my business has worked for me as the other side of my business is digital creation for my lifestyle blog Kimmikhaos. I have been able to extend a lot of what I’ve learned there into my ceramics business. Currently, the two brands are housed on one site and represent both sides of my creative journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a ceramic sculptor and a digital creator. As a digital creator, I use my brand to promote wellness, confidence, and natural living. This has allowed me to work with various brands and build a small following of like-minded people. My ceramics work showcases sculpture primarily. I could just as easily make cups and plates, but they do not bring me as much joy as sculpting characters that comment on my personal experiences. My most known pieces are plant pots with lots of personality and Divines (long-neck ladies) that showcase my zeal for Afro-Caribbean culture and hair. My chosen medium and the subjects I cover sets me apart from my contemporaries. My work comments on the celebration of the chaotic times in life and finding beauty and peace in those times. I am proud that I am able to highlight my culture and encourage others to channel life’s chaos into confidence and creativity.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid-19 gave me the chance to seriously think about the direction of my brand. The quarantine gave birth to the ceramics store, as it gave me more time to work on my art. This time allowed me to experiment and test the market with a variety of designs and methods. The most important thing that I have taken from this experience is to cherish the energy that others put into me and use that positivity to encourage others. This pandemic has been difficult for us all in various ways, and it is truly important to me that whatever I put my energy into sparks joy for me and others. I’d like to think that each Khaos Creates piece evokes positivity in those who appreciate them.
