Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Uchi.
Patty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I did my first photoshoot when I was 17. At first, I did a lot of volunteer and trade work in order to gain experience and build my portfolio. I also got a degree in Beauty Marketing from FIDM. During my time there, I did a couple marketing internships, and I was the beauty editor of the school magazine. I also did makeup retail to learn more about the business side of makeup, which led me to Clinique, where I learned all about skin, and later moved on to product development and marketing in the beauty industry. With my artistry background and my degree, I was, fortunately, able to make a career out of something I’m so passionate about.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been the easiest. It’s impossible to get paid to do makeup without a lot or portfolio. I did a lot of free work while trying to build my kit. And I also did school and work full time. Starting a career in marketing was even harder because there is so much competition. It took a lot of time and energy, but it was definitely very rewarding and absolutely worth it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Patty Uchi Makeup story. Tell us more about the business.
Being able to physically hold a product that I created from start to finish would probably be my proudest moment. It meant a lot to be able to combine all of my skills and experience and create a product from scratch and eventually be able to see it on shelves.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My Mom has probably been my biggest inspiration. Being able to grow up and watch her go from having nothing to building an amazing life while raising my sister and me at the same time has inspired me to never give up on my goals and dreams. My aunt is another big inspiration to me. I’ve always looked up to her in so many ways. She inspires me to always try to be the best version of myself and to always work hard for what I want. My grandmother, of course, is another inspiration. She is the strongest and most loving woman I know. She reminds me that it’s okay to stop and enjoy the little things in life once in awhile.
