Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Lew.
Marissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story started back when I made my first online bikini purchase from a pretty well-known luxury swim brand in 2010. I ordered a size large top and naturally, when it came in the mail, I was so excited to try it on. But, when I did, my size large top felt like it was a size large in a kids size and a lightbulb went off in my head. As time went on, I ordered more bikinis (because you have to make the same mistake like 20 times, right!?). Each time I got a new bikini, it further confirmed for me that the sizing in the swimwear industry was off. After doing some research and seeing how friends felt about the fit of their bikinis, I realized that every girl from size 0-16 had something to say about how something was too small or too big.
Finally, I knew I had to do something about it. Not having gone to school for design or fashion, I blindly set out into the world of designing bikinis and that’s how Mahina Bikinis was born.
My mission is and has been to design bikinis to fit ‘true to size’ so that I can empower girls to feel confident and beautiful while wearing their bikinis. Getting to where I am today has definitely not been easy and there is still definitely a lot of work ahead of me, but I’m so excited for what the future holds for Mahina Bikinis!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has its ups and its downs. Starting a company/brand from the ground up is a lot of work but my advice to other women is to not be discouraged because there will be days where you sit back and ask yourself “what the f am I doing?!”. Just keep going! Rome wasn’t built in one day and all good things take time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Mahina Bikinis story. Tell us more about the business.
I own and design a local swimwear brand – Mahina Bikinis.
I specialize in creating bikinis that are true to size without lacking in quality and style. With that said, that’s what I’m most proud of and what set’s us apart from others – I create bathing suits to help women feel confident in rocking their bikini body.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Take risks and choose something that makes you happy. When you choose something that you’re passionate about, the money will eventually follow.
