Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilie Sobel.
Emilie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Emilie Sobel and I am 25 years old living in Miami Beach, Florida. I was born and raised here in Miami, however, I left the city to attend school in Savannah, Georgia where I majored in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising at the Savannah College of Art and Design. With a background in arts (concentrating in painting at my magnet high school), I spent most of my time in college interning in New York City for major fashion magazines at Hearst Corporation, Seventeen Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. While I studied and interned I also founded my lifestyle and fashion blog, Soul in Stilettos, my junior year of college. It has been successful and growing ever since.
After graduating with a BFA in 2014, I made the decision to move back to my home in Miami where I began my career in Social Media. I accepted a position as a Social Media Coordinator at Social Thinkking in October of 2014 and have been working at the agency ever since. While working in social media, I continue to write for my blog and post on my social channels.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a challenge maintaining my blog, my social media channels and a full-time job all at once. I am a firm believer that everyone should have a passion project – something they do that is fully for themselves. For me, my blog is exactly that. If it weren’t challenging, it wouldn’t be exciting, so I wouldn’t have it any other way.
My advice would be to stay as organized as possible. When I first started, I made it a point to sit down and create a list of goals I wanted to accomplish with my blog and I’ve made sure to continue to make my lists as I grow and become more successful. I believe that staying organized and on top of everything you need to do is the key. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged, especially in such an oversaturated market.
At the beginning of your day, make it a point to write down your checklist of things you have to do on that day. Sit down and work until everything on your list is done.
Personally, writing something down and having that reminder in front of me helps so much. Remember that this is something you want to do, and regardless of if you go viral or only have 10 followers, it’s so worth it at the end of the day. There is nothing like having a creative outlet that is truly all yours.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Soul in Stilettos story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a full-time social media manager at a social media agency, Social Thinking, located in Midtown Miami. I work with clients to help them build and create their communities on social media. I do everything from creating content, posting to their social accounts, managing their communities and engagement and more. When I am not at my day job, I work on my blog, Soul in Stilettos.
I started this in college as a passion project. Having a blog was something I had wanted to do for a while. I loved the idea of having my own space that would allow me to write and share my ideas and thoughts, and people could actually go and read if they were interested in it. It was something I created mostly for myself. The following didn’t matter too much to me, it was just something awesome that happened. I have a background in arts and fashion, so founding my blog ended up being a great way for me to continue with my fashion interests while maintaining a job in marketing that I love.
As a brand, I am most proud of the name I’ve built for myself and my blog. I have done everything myself – from website creation to posting and copywriting and self-promotion. It’s a project I’ve made sure to maintain for over 5 years and it has only continued to grow. Becuase of my blog, not only did I realize I could have a career working in social media, but I’ve partnered with brands I had only dreamt of working with. I’ve collaborated with Tiffany & Co., Toyota, Southwest Airlines and more. And honestly, it just keeps getting better and better.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Know your worth and work hard. I was lucky to always have a sense of what I wanted to do in my career. I followed my dreams and passions and went with my heart. I have extremely supportive parents who helped me get to where I am, but they also pushed me to work hard, build my resume and do everything I needed to do in order to get into the right schools, and ultimately, the right career for me. Make sure you are doing what you love because if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life.
