Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Rodriguez Samantha Vaquerano.
Hi Karen Rodriguez , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We started off as co-supervisors for our respective departments (Karen- occupational therapy and Sam- speech therapy). Over the years, we developed a really good professional relationship and our trust and respect for one another grew. We eventually outgrew that practice and decided to start our own. Our vision for what we wanted our practice to be aligned, so we dove in head first and here we are, 4 years later.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not. We’ve had our challenges, as do most first-time business owners, but we figured out a way to get through each one. We are both solution-driven and we don’t let obstacles get in our way.
Since we both had worked alongside each other for many years before opening up our own space, we had a good a sense of how to tackle challenges and come up with solutions.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kids L.A.B. Therapy?
Kids L.A.B. Therapy is a niche specialty clinic serving the pediatric population by providing speech therapy and occupational therapy using a play-based approach. We are conveniently located in the heart of South Miami. Our passion is helping children grow by leaps and bounds (hence L.A.B acronym). We pride ourselves in the 20+ years of combined experience in the pediatric development sector. Each discipline has their own speciality: Sam’s field of expertise is Apraxia and Karen’s field of expertise is Sensory Integration. Aside from occupational therapy and speech therapy, we also host social groups, parent coaching, play-room consults, pediatric development workshops for teachers and other pediatric professionals. We continue to be a teaching clinic, which allows us to teach grad students, interns, and volunteers the beauty of our field.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was playing doctor and pretending my Barbies were my patients. I knew I wanted to help others from a very young age. -Karen
My favorite childhood memory was playing castle and forts with my cousins and sisters. Working together to build a secret hideaway was always such a thrill. Using our imagination was the best play skill! -Sam
