Today we’d like to introduce you to Josue Alvarez.
Hi Josue, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never really pictured myself being on camera or speaking out as candidly as I do now, much less launching a podcast. I’m pretty to myself most of the time, but thanks to Miami traffic, I would end up bored in my car often and started doing little “car rants” on my Instagram stories. Eventually, people started engaging with the things I would say and telling me I should start a podcast or some sort of actual online presence. It took a while for me to actually take what they were saying seriously, but here we are – with a small but loyal and growing online following. I launched the podcast and brand two months ago.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I mean, it’s been pretty smooth so far… I like to keep it as raw and authentic as I can, and that can rub some people the wrong way sometimes, but I mean, you’re bound to ruffle some feathers when doing anything public. I love this city, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sometimes I’ll poke fun at it, but it’s all love. It is what it is. The rest has really just been learning, learning about social media algorithms, editing, filming, recording, what resonates with people… it’s all-new territory for me, but it’s fun.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So the essence of this podcast/brand is really to create a local presence that is unbiased, real, yet light-hearted. I really wanna talk about things that affect us locally as Miamians, whether it’s politics, nightlife, environment, self-development, drugs & alcohol, sex, career, and the shape that these things take in this city, the things that make Miami, Miami. I’m not exactly a comedian, so I try my best to make these topics light and palatable for most people – I’m honestly just learning as I go. But I want people to really resonate with my content, laugh, but at the end of the day, take something of value from it. Grow a little, ya know? Sometimes I’ll speak about the ridiculousness of this city, like people twerking on cars in the middle of the highway, and other times I’ll touch on why you’re out here projecting your insecurities on someone else. It’s a spectrum, guy.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I definitely learned to enjoy the little things, the things we take for granted. Something as simple as seeing a grandparent or just going outside. It’s put things into perspective, the things that actually matter.
