Check out Anthony Harris and Gerhard Swart at Ceramic Matter’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Harris & Gerhard Swart at Ceramic Matters.

Anthony Harris & Gerhard Swart at Ceramic Matters, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Ceramic Matters started in 1998. The opportunity to do upmarket installations for clients. Our Training: Anthony has a Fine-art background and Gerhard a Print=making and Ceramic training. Work concerns the representation of our traditions, personal interest, our history and present environment; incorporating the natural and domestic. The work consists of units/modules that embrace a creative idea. The elements work together to enhance or depict.

Exclusive designs for specific projects are often commissioned – i.e.
• Large 5 meter Chandeliers made for a Casino finished in an “old cast iron” finish
• Da Vinci Hotel for International Designer Stephan Falcke giving us “Artistic Licence” to design work within the parameters of his “Black & White, 1960’s, Retro” theme.
• Large Ceramic Screen for New York Based Vicente Wolf for a hotel in Macau
• Worked with large stores such as Anthropologi and West Elm in the USA

Recent work include:
• a range of furniture designed and made in collaboration with Cape Town based product designer Laurie Wiid at Wiid Designs. The range includes ceramic Table tops and hand drawn images on metal benches.
• Installations at the Everard Read Gallery in Franchhoek and other galleries in South Africa.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As per previous question, we work predominantly in Earthenware Ceramics.

Projects include hand painted tiles for a local Wine Estate or ceramic side tables for a Boutique Hotel. . . Currently working with a wine producer to develop the first Terra Cotta Mescal distillery in South Africa.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Have a dream
Have a focus
Integrity and self expression is important
Persevere and never stop learning. . .

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Based in the wine lands of Wellington, South Africa. We live in a 300 year old house and the studio is in an old barn on the property.
