Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Burks Sr.
Anthony, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a Florida Native. African-American of Bahamian descent. Art has been part of my life all of my life. I started out as a color pencil artist since HS, however explored other forms of media over time. I also have a background in graphic design and illustration which is what I received my degree in. I worked in the sign industry for 22 years. After leaving, I spent my next phase pursuing my passion of fine art.
In my early years of exploring opportunities to exhibit in galleries, I found it extremely challenging to get into the door. I decided to partner with other fellow artists and curate my own art exhibitions. I also found the need to teach younger artists to develop their own identity in the arts as well. So, I teach through several different organizations.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My works result from the blending of my mind and heart. It is a gift from God that I love and cherish immensely. Whether choosing a bird, animal or beautiful woman as my subject, I achieve diversity by incorporating into my art bright colors and abstract images. I want my audience to be as free in viewing my work as I am in creating it. Change is a challenge for many artists, but I have learned to embrace it. I am constantly inspired by the artists that I mentor and the shows that I curate. My artwork evolves as I create new collections that tell new stories. I am eager to tackle the next stage of my artistic journey.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Just get out there. Go to art openings, get a membership to art organizations, find a mentor. Don’t wait for others to find you. Find your own path. Find someone who can assist you in making connections.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I will also be in several exhibitions this upcoming season. This includes: Florida Atlantic University’s Birding Reflections curated by Sam Perry. Collaboration: African Diaspora Exhibition in City place curated by my company ATB Fine Artists & Designers LLC.
