Art & Life with Sebastian Vasquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Vasquez.

Sebastian, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
After a troubled childhood moving from place to place in Central America, my father was granted an opportunity to work in North America and brought me here three years ago. Beforehand my creativity was extremely suppressed by numerous factors the main being the mainstream religion and conservative approach to life in that region… fortunately, I was able to connect with my true nature once I moved here. I’ve witnessed a lot of the corruption and injustice present in this world, and my mission as a creator is to voice these problems so we can learn from our mistakes and progress in a more prosperous manner.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The visual style of my work is very surreal and psychedelic drawn from my subconscious and perception, but it holds very human themes. I like to expose the corrupt parts of institutions like the government, cults, religion, and the human condition. My work is very aggressive, but it all comes from a place of love, the need for everyone to be treated justly and fairly. I expose the things we don’t like to talk about in order to spark activism that evokes social change. I’m a muralist, photographer, writer, painter, illustrator, dancer, and play a lil harmonica here and there.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
You gotta be willing to starve, this is not an easy path, and it’ll put you down in your knees at times the best I can say is that it’s easy to give in to the weight so don’t… Know that this path is an endless process, and the more active you stay, the more benefits will come your way. Don’t express what people want to see; express what they need to see. Use your voice don’t emulate someone else’s, your voice is what makes your work unique.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m currently exhibiting at the Moksha Arts Collective Gallery, murals in underground venues like Esquina de Abuela. I also sell original mixed media pieces, prints of my work, fashion accessories, all through my Instagram page: @Sea_Vass.
