Art & Life with Dylan Golden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Golden.

Dylan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I began rapping at a very early age. I was probably 13 when I first participated in the yearly talent show and performed my original music. I had my first professional studio experience when I was 15. It felt very natural to express myself. I really began taking my musical journey seriously when I was in my freshman year of college. I was bouncing from School to school within my freshman year. I ended up finding my producer/longtime friend Kris Karz in an audio engineering class. I was pretty awful in the class, So I knew if I became friends with Kris, I could probably get by with a “C.” later that year I ended up releasing my first full-length project. (2011 ” Fade to Gold”) After that, I dropped out of college for good and moved to NYC. Before moving to New York Kris and I would spend hours a day working on new music for my next project entitled ” Treasures of the Heart.” In October of 2012, I officially moved from the beautiful city of Miami to the bustling streets of New York. It was extremely difficult at first. Sleeping on my Sister’s couch for six months, Struggling with Finances. I ended up finding a Job in the restaurant industry as a Buss boy. There I would meet my soon to be Wife Iuliia. After the first six months in Harlem. My Sister and I moved to Brooklyn and thats where my entire life changed. I released “Treasures of the Heart. Which definitely got me more attention. I got married at 22. Released another Album “Humble Beginnings” in 2016. Started working as a line cook in some of NYC”S finest restaurants. Did that for six years and now I am 27 and I am working a lot on my music but also creating some really meaningful films. My team GSM Creative just had an incredible show in April 2019 at Lincoln Center, Where I performed music from my latest album “Revolution of the Heart” Which we also created a short music film for called “Half Dead” and we previewed our newest film “La Lucha de La Mujer” (Role: Writer/Cinematographer) A film about my grandmother and the injustices she faced as an immigrant moving to the states in the 1940s. All in all. I am very grateful for the experiences I have had here in Brooklyn, and I think living in Miami definitely shaped my sound and creativity.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make Hip Hop music with a conscious effort, and I make Films with my team GSM Creative. Depending on the project, my role varies, but I feel I shine most in Cinematography and Writing.

I want to be able to use my voice for a greater cause and to be able to tell the stories that are important, to tell the stories people are not listening to or don’t understand because they didn’t grow up in those circumstances. My main thing as an artist is to be able to fully express myself and to fully engage in storytelling. My ultimate goal as an artist is to make art and music that is going to have an impact on someone’s life, whether it’s five, ten, twenty years from now. Ultimately I want my legacy to have moved somebody’s life in a positive direction.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Invest in yourself. If you can’t find an engineer, learn! If you can’t find someone to create your music videos. Learn the craft. It will take more time, and You will have to make sacrifices, but it’s so much more rewarding. I became a Filmmaker out of Necessity. I’ve recorded the majority of my music alone in my room, Surround yourself with only a few people that genuinely believe in you, and work together. Work on their projects, help them grow so they can return the favor. I have a tremendous appreciation for everyone involved in my journey, especially My Family. Without them nothing is possible. My wife Iuliia, Sister Bianca, and producer Kris Karz. They keep me going.

Since I’m reading this inspiring account of this young artist while I’m getting knee therapy at Fox Physical Therapy ….the recurring theme i sense from Dylan Golden is that he is all about courage and determination, which is what my life needs at this precise moment in my life. This young artist isn’t just creative and talented but he is the epitome of what Humanism is .
