Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeiry Cortez Gomez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well following my mother’s footsteps I became an insurance agent and worked as a commercial/homeowner insurance agent supervisor for about nine years and attended some college, but never finished. School was never really my thing or my strong point as a young girl. Being an insurance agent at a young age was an extremely stressful job, not much different than being a wedding planner per se. I became a young mother of my first son at the age of 21, still working as a full-time insurance agent, but always taking the time in planning birthdays, baby showers, intimate weddings, for family and friends on weekends. The multitasking as a young mother never ended, but I loved creating and crafting and seeing those smiles of my family and friends seeing their vision come to life on their event day.
I then became a mother of my second son at the age of 25 and still continued to be an insurance agent and played the role of “event planner”. But this is when I realized I loved being that “event planner” and began to embark on the journey and thought of actually developing my own business. I thought I was crazy, a mother two young boys working a full-time job. I started slowly and continued planning events for so many family and friends, and actually would charge a small fee and then I decide to leave my longtime job as an insurance agent. Short after leaving my job I became a mother to my daughter at the age of 26 and decided to be a “stay at home” mom full time.
So, to say the least, I paused for a bit on the idea of beginning my business as an an event planner in 2006 until my daughter would be of age to begin Pre-K, so I had more time to focus on my dream and vision. Then around 2009, I thought I was ready to begin as the kids were getting older and I had some form of a “mommy” schedule under control. So I decided on one Sunday afternoon sitting on the couch to establish “Events by Zeiry.” I was actually working part-time at the kids charter school as the principal’s administrative assistant to pass time and not be home. But little did I know what God had planned for me, my health had taken a turn, and I had throat surgery. So all plans were paused, and my health was a priority.
But then in 2010, my daughter was about almost four years old, and I said to myself now is the time. After planning three close friends weddings, even one time being seven months pregnant and working the wedding with swollen feet. I was ready to begin my journey as a wedding planner and make Events by Zeiry a reality. I had many family and friends that doubted my decision and vision and continuously told me I was “crazy” and “you will never make it” or “your a mom you can’t do that,” but amongst all obstacles and challenges along the way, I made it happen.
Fast forward to today its been almost nine years, and 2 months from being 40 and I am proud to say I am now a Destination Wedding Planner, a full-time business owner know as “Z” of Events by Zeiry, with a team of amazing ladies as my assistants that are always one step beside me making sure each wedding is a true success. I have an amazing support system from my loved ones and dearest friends near and far. And of course, my children that are so understanding and deal with moms constant busy schedule, endless travel, and sometimes missing important moments. But one thing they truly know is how much I love them and appreciate their love and support and everything I sacrifice is for their happiness and mine.
So many times I am asked “how do you do it, travel, work non-stop and be a mom and still have it together?” and I always answer honestly and say “I don’t know.” I was raised to always pull through and to never give up on my faith, even though there have been many times I have wanted to. Being a wedding planner is challenging, with sleepless nights, endless hours of planning, beyond stressful moments put always pushing through no matter what and still loving it. Being part of our couples magical day, starting their new journey together as Mr. & Mrs. is such a rewarding feeling. This journey thus far has been filled with many blessings, and some hard times as well but my journey continues, and I look forward to what is to come next. This forever will be my dream job.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the many struggles along the way were the doubts of being able to make it and daily life challenges — the struggle of balancing my personal life and being a business owner.
This road has not been smooth by far, but that’s ok because those moments are what have made me a successful business owner and wedding planner. As I always say “Faith it until you make it”
Events by Zeiry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Events by Zeiry is a boutique destination wedding planning firm based out of South Florida. We are specializing in creating intimate for luxury weddings near or far for our couples. We strive in exceeding the expectations of our couples, always providing the utmost personalized service and always trying to maintain a stress-free planning experience.
Many times in planning a wedding, and working with many teams of vendors I am often told “you’re one of the sweetest wedding planners and calmest we have worked with…” and I am always taken back by that comment. I find it so important to be kind and respectful with your fellow vendors, without them on your team on wedding day things would not be possible.
When I am in my element on the wedding day and working with my fellow vendors, it’s such an amazing and fulfilling moment. Some of these vendors have become longtime friends within the business and in my personal life. I think maybe that’s what sets me apart from others at times. I truly love being a wedding planner.
I have to say I am so proud of how much I have grown in the past few years, amongst the doubt of others. I have made it this far, and I know there is so much more ahead.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
How do I define success?… I think embracing the process of growing, understanding the many obstacles that come with this career as a wedding planner. As I continue to grow and become successful, I will always be true to myself and change for no one. This is my journey, and this is what has allowed me to grow as a business owner and on a personal level.
