Meet Rebecca Bratter of Greenspoon Marder in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Bratter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rebecca. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2001, I interviewed to be a summer associate at Greenspoon Marder LLP. I was a summer associate from 2001 until I graduated in 2003. In 2003, I became one of our youngest litigation associates and I worked in the complex litigation department. I had the opportunity to handle trials and litigation work for some of the firm’s biggest clients, and was involved in trails and depositions all around the country. As I grew as a litigation associate, I eventually became a partner and took over the litigation department in Fort Lauderdale with the help of Richard Epstein. Through that experience, Gerald Greenspoon and Michael Marder recognized that I had management qualities. I learned how to work with other departments and to manage other groups and lawyers leading me into the position I am today as Deputy Managing Partner, where I get to work with all the different departments in the firm. I enjoy working with marketing, human resources, IT and all of the lawyers and staff across the country.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! Is any path to success ever smooth? There will always be bumps on the road, the true test is how you handle those rough times or moments. At the beginning I was often mistaken for a court reporter in the courthouse while I was waiting for my case to be called. Of course once I was called, it was evident that I had a loud voice and a strong opinion! There are decisions to be made everyday from how to handle your son’s sixth grade math homework on FaceTime to making sure to spend enough time in each office so that every single employee feels valued. When I joined the firm we had a handful of Offices and I think twenty attorneys, now we have over 250! Everyday I think about how to make sure that the same culture that existed ten and twenty years ago, is felt today in every office.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Greenspoon Marder LLP – what should we know?
I serve as the firm-wide deputy managing partner for Greenspoon Marder LLP which has become a national full-service, Am Law 200 and NLJ 500 ranked law firm with more than 200 attorneys across 26 locations throughout the U.S. I am responsible for the firm’s strategy and growth, internally and externally, as well as various duties including hiring and firm accounting. In my role as deputy managing partner, I have the opportunity to work with all departments in the firm and making sure we maintain the culture at Greenspoon Marder. I am able to work with potential new lawyers, lateral hires and associates. I not only have the opportunity to work with lawyers, but I also have the opportunity to work with our staff.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There simply is no substitution for hard work and effort.
