Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykya Brown.
Mykya, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Mykya Brown, born and raised in Miami, Florida, I’m an up and coming fashion designer, wardrobe stylist, and closet organizer. I love solving fashion dilemmas, answering questions about ways to put outfits together. I have a natural, creative eye for pairing unique clothing pieces and creating edgy and timeless looks.
I love anything that revolves around fashion and art. Ever since I was little I remember having the cutest clothes and matching everything together. I found it infatuating to find things that matched an outfit or paired stuff together so that it would contrast. I recall dressing up in my little kiddie heels and putting on my fashion show. the passion for fashion didn’t stop there.
As I grew older, I always would buy magazines and browse the internet on what is the new fashion trend. Now before the inclusivity in the fashion world today, finding trendy plus size clothing was hard. I wanted to wear the latest pieces and try the latest styles in the magazine but I couldn’t find anything in my size. This encouraged me to design my clothes. I would study the new styles and create them myself with a twist of my personality.
You the saying “If you look good, you feel good.” Well, it’s true! expressing myself through design and style gave me that extra boost of confidence. Family and friends would always ask me to design for them or give them styling tips. My mom would always motivate me to start my own fashion business but the fear of failure held me back from starting my business. I remember one night talking to God about entering the fashion industry, asking him is this really for me. I decided I needed to let go of fear and step out on faith. From that day forward Merahkii Styles was created and many amazing doors have opened for me to design and style for women.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nope! It has not been a smooth road at all. I’ve encountered so many obstacles, to the point where I wanted to throw in the towel. One of my biggest struggles along the way is marketing on social media. Trying to find the time to fit it into my already packed schedule to post new designs and styles on social media platforms. I wasn’t investing in social media marketing, I felt like I was missing potential clients.
My other biggest struggle is having a creative block from time to time, which is common for most creators. it’s especially frustrating when you’re chugging along, trying to be your most brilliant, creative self and, suddenly, nothing feels right.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
