Meet Julie Curry of Bake’n Babes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Curry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t grow up cooking, but after having my daughter I began making daily meals for my new family. Preparing daily meals made me extremely aware of what was going into our food and caused me to take a hard look at the quality of what I was feeding my family. I started cooking more and more food from scratch and fell in love with the precision and control of baking.

One weekend I entered the Ybor City Cupcake Contest with a French Toast Maple Bacon cupcake and won first place. I thought that it would just be a quick contest for fun until the organizers asked if I’d be back the following week to sell in the weekly market, it was then that Bake’n Babes was born. Bake’n Babes started selling cupcakes at the local markets, but soon expanded to selling our addictive Paleo Granola and taking catering orders. We recently just opened our first storefront in Tampa’s first food hall- The Hall on Franklin.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not having our own commercial kitchen space made things difficult, but we were thankful for the generosity of Tampa restaurant community and the several restaurants that allowed us to use their space.

Bake’n Babes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Bake’n Babes makes all of the classics with a local twist. Our paleo granola parfait uses local honey and Greek Boy’s yogurt right from Tarpon Springs, our beer battered cupcakes are based around Cigar City’s Florida Cracker beer, and we use Plant City strawberries in everything. At the Hall, we’ll be using produce from Cee Bee’s Citrus in a variety of ways like muffins, cheesecake bars, and sorbets.

Most of our food plays up the balance between salty and sweet, though we will have some more savory items when our storefront opens inside The Hall on Franklin. You’ll find that we love to make boozy versions of many of our desserts and that we have an incredible attention to detail in everything that we do. At the end of the day, we want to make sure that everything we put out is high quality and a lot of fun.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We constantly strive to be better and provide our guests with unparalleled customer service and classic comfort foods that we all know and love.
