Today we’d like to introduce you to John Peter Mejia-Levy and RJ Nunez.
John and RJ, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, we are a brother & sister duo…. if anyone asks, I’m the young & cute one BUT, only if anyone asks…
I’m actually 14 years older than her and I have worked my butt off to ensure that she has become the better (what I like to call my 2.0) version of me. As of right now she is my Robin, someday in the not too distant future, I will become the Robin to her Batman.
After living in the DC area for 10 years my family and I made the choice to move back to S. Florida.
Although, I was offered great opportunities to work for high-end salons in the Brickell, South Beach and Las Olas area, none of them were the ideal fit for me due to the struggles of the balance between family and career.
A year later, my sister decided to follow us to S. FL, I was still struggling to figure out where my career would fit. We are both family oriented and our families come first but we also love what we do and to be able to balance both passion and family we felt that opening up our own shop would fit best…
And that’s how the idea of us working together was born.
In theory, the fairytale sounded great…
-Family together again – Check
-Stylists – Check
-Location – Check
The only problem with that scenario was that we had no clients but I had faith that it would all work out.
That was two years ago this past June (2015) and we started with a tiny suite, 8 months later we moved to a suite that was only 10 square feet larger. Then this past January (2017) we moved to one of the largest suites that the building had to offer.
Even though we were both established stylists in DC we needed to find out what was going to set us apart from other stylists. With us both having a background in the customer service industry (hotels) we figured, why re-invent the wheel. So, we went back to basics i.e. Customer Service and our approach to hair… “Healthy hair”
Our niche became healthy hair and with that being said we KNEW that we would not be everyone’s “cup of tea” because we find that a lot of people want instant gratification when it comes to their hair. We needed to make sure that they share the same belief, that the integrity of their hair must come first.
That is why we interview our clients the same way they interview us. You would be surprised by how many people just want to get stuff done without any regards for the integrity of their hair. We need our clients to understand and believe that the health of their hair is everything, especially living here in S. FL, with its harsh water and crazy elements.
That’s when our hashtag #drinkourkoolaid was created…
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? Sure… Back then we had plenty of time to keep our hair on point while drinking our own Kool-Aid… hahaha
Current struggle… four inches of grays due to clients wanting heathy hair!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the BS HairShop story. Tell us more about the business.
Cut, color and everything in between… but only in a healthy way.
We specialize in great hair (that’s a given) and making sure that our clients feel at home while giving them a dose of reality when it comes to their hair.
What are we most proud of? That we are not sellouts. (healthy hair > $$$$)
What sets us apart from the rest? We know our limitations and if we know that someone can do a better job we would definitely refer them.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We think our industry is at a crossroads so I can’t speak for us all as a whole BUT… what we can tell you is how WE are contributing towards the change.
AGAIN, Back to Customer Service basics…
-Virtual Consultations prior to their appointment- We introduce ourselves, exchange photos (Current and Inspirational pic) and answer any questions that they may have…By the time they reach our chair there is 90% excitement and 10% nerves. This also, gives us the opportunity to approach each appointment with a game plan prior to the client’s arrival.
-Definitely health of hair—
-Communication- Stylist accessibility between appointments.
(A client recently mentioned how much she loves not having to wait until her next appointment to talk to her stylist)
-5 day Policy- Whether it’s your 1st visit or 50th visit with us, you have a 5 day grace period to make any changes at no charge.
-Follow-up- First time clients/Loyal clients (that did a drastic change) receive a follow up call to ensure they are happy with the outcome.
-Product Purchases- Follow up reminder of how to use the product they purchased.
And that’s how we feel that we are contributing to the changes that the industry is going through…
