Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal “Visualist” Clark.
Jamaal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I go by Visualist, Its an acronym for Vision Illuminating Supreme Understanding Art Life In Surreal Times. I’m a visual artist that has been interested in art since the age of seven. I’ve always been influenced from graffiti art, Ancient Egypt to things in nature. I was always pushed to pursue art from my parents and family members. I studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia my hometown. And later graduated from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. My art has a variation of mediums. I like to use spray paint, acrylic, and oil paint when painting depictions of Ancient Egypt. Photography is also one of my favorite mediums. I have doing photography since high school. Today photography and painting are pretty much my balanced disciplines. Adding to my artist alias and brand “Visualist” which is aimed to inspire and move everyone.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Honestly I don’t think its suppose to be smooth. If it was everyone would be doing it. I have run into all kinds of struggles throughout my journey. One moment that stands out is when I was attending the Art Institute. I had a meeting with the head of department and he basically flat out told me that my ideas and creations wouldn’t work. Almost without hesitation. That incident did affect me in a major way. A new sense of confidence emerged in me after that meeting. I became more determined to prove any doubters wrong of my artwork. Also not to let anyone or anybody try to get me off track of my dreams and stunt my creative spirit.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My two specialties would be painting and photography. Over the years, I have become known for the content that I paint. Kings and Queens of Ancient and Modern Times, Iconic figures, and cartoon characters that I have created. Services that I provide are custom paintings such as portraits to custom logos. Also, with my photography I offer personalized photo shoots that cater to the client but definitely aim to make it a creative collab.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up, I would say I was curious. As a child, I wanted to be an astronaut. I suppose Art was the next closest thing. I always had a need to create. That became my outlet.
