Today we’d like to introduce you to Fern L. Conn.
Fern, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hello! Thank you for having me here. I am excited to share my love of yoga and community as well as sharing my personal story. I have been in the wellness industry for over 30 years. Growing up in New York City, I was exposed to the arts at an early age. I began taking dance classes at the age of 3 and this started my love for the movement and healing arts. I began my teaching career as a Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor. I taught aerobics, step, barre, pilates, body sculpting and even tap dancing! I have been a motivational speaker and have lead trainings in the fitness industry for many years. My passion has always been for inspiring, teaching and motivating others to live their best lives. I moved from New York City to South Florida in 1990 and pursued a career in wellness right away. I have taught in many area country clubs, fitness centers and yoga studios throughout South Florida. I have lead teacher trainings, developed corporate wellness programs and lead private sessions with students from all walks of life.
Last November, I was presented with an opportunity to share a space with someone who was offering kids fitness classes. This lasted for a couple of months and in July my daughter and I took over space. We are now a full time yoga studio and healing arts center in Downtown Delray Beach! One of the wonderful aspects of my life is being in business with my daughter Tyla Conn who is also a fitness coach and a Registered Yoga Teacher! There aren’t many mother/daughter yoga studios and we offer a warm and family-oriented experience.
I am an ERYT500 Yoga Teacher, Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider & I am an ACE Certified Personal Trainer. I also have a business degree and a Florida real estate brokers license. My passion is bringing the community together with yoga and other wellness programs. I also believe in community service and we hold a fundraiser each month at Dancing Lion Studio. We are creating special online content and try to be ahead of the curve with unique offerings. I enjoy being creative in how we offer yoga to all!
Has it been a smooth road?
No road is a smooth road. Life is full of twists and turns and it truly is how we show up that matters. My struggles have made me the person that I am today. I use the compassion and empathy that I have learned through life’s lessons to make me a better teacher. I am an extremely hard worker and I believe in commitment and showing up when needed.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dancing Lion Studio is a very special place. We are a neighborhood studio with a roster of amazing teachers. The name Dancing Lion comes from a couple of places. There is a movement in the yoga practice where the student is on their hands and knees and moves freely, perhaps with their eyes closed. It is a movement that conveys liberation and personal freedom. Moving in a way that suits them. We want everyone who walks through our door to feel like they are comfortable and showing up exactly the way they feel best.
Our classes are named for the emotional and energetic realm of the body. We have our signature Vinyasa flow that we call Fire & Inspire. Our Yin/Restorative class is called Release and Restore. We offer meditation, Yoga Nidra, ecstatic dance, Kundalini, Reiki & Sound Healing & more.
We keep to the traditions of yoga. Our students learn not only asana but also the rich history and philosophy of the 8 limb path. Our teacher training program is comprehensive and unique.
We now also offer kids yoga! What better way to be fit as well as build self esteem & learn about community and kindness. Learning yoga as a child creates a mindset of gratitude and helps teach focus and inner strength.
We are a Healing Arts Center. We offer a Wellness Series of seminars and special events and workshops that appeal to everyone. The main focus of Dancing Lion Studio is to build community and connection. We are proud of the space that we have created and look forward to adding Teacher Training, retreats and more!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
South Florida is abundant with opportunities for those who want to work hard. It is culturally diverse and a place where a hard working professional can shine. To anyone starting, I recommend that you always be a student. Never stop learning your craft. If you are starting a business be open-minded and always treat people with respect. Create a culture where people feel comfortable coming to you for advice as well as suggestions. Be humble and grateful!
