Meet Dr. Edwin Hernandez of EGLA Communications in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Edwin Hernandez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came to the US from Honduras in 1997 as a Fulbright Scholar to the University of Florida, there, I earned a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as a PhD in 2002. My first job was at Microsoft working for the Windows Wireless division and later on moved to South Florida to work for Motorola in Plantation.

Since 2010, I have worked promoting my own patents and left corporate America. My patents have been now licensed by major phone manufactures and now are under litigation against T-Mobile and Verizon for 4G simulation and wireless handoff. As part of a group of Honduras, in 2011, I was a co-founder of “Honduras Global” an organization created to assist young engineers and Honduran entrepreneurs reach their dreams, by connecting them with more than 100 successful Hondurans around the world.

The company I created with my parents, is called EGLA. EGLA COMMUNICATIONS was incubated at the FAU Research Park circa 2012, initially as part of a small project streaming music for DMX Music, and later on a platform evolved to finally launch “Cloud to Cable TV.” Additionally, EGLA helps commercialize other products such as SAFEFI, Mobile CDS, Mobile CAD and others.

EGLA created “Cloud to Cable TV,” a patent-pending innovative platform that connects Cloud-based Services (e.g. Pandora, Deezer, Netflix) with devices including phones, smart TVs and others, with Cable TV systems (e.g. COMCAST, TIGO, others). Cloud to Cable has enabled music and videos to be streamed to more than 40M households all over LATAM and the US.

In 2017, EGLA starting helping other inventors and entrepreneurs with their patents, business and more, with the vision to lead innovation in Boca Raton thru our incubator called, the EGLAVATOR. The EGLAVATOR works with tech startups in the areas of Media, Blockchain, 4G/Virtualization and Cloud. As an inventor and patent expert, I have 10 issued patents and continue collaborating doing R&D and working with the academic community.

I commercialize my own patents and my incubator is currently assisting 9 different tech startups with tech and business advice, high-tech space and a great environment to create technological products in Florida.

I am single but would love to meet a wife in the coming years and establish my own family.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
None, capital has been an issue, I have been in court against tech giants. They are merciless, inventors have to deal with a lot of humiliating and expensive lawsuits just to make their patents and innovations be respected. I personally lost my job for complaining about one of my patents.

Additionally, as an inexperienced entrepreneur, I have faced challenges with the lack of funding offered to tech entrepreneurs, specially Latinos. Not even showing revenues, customers and a working functional product was ever enough to raise capital, regardless, I bootstrapped the business with my family and my own funds and was able to generate over a million dollars in revenues in three years with a very innovative technology and my own funds.

In order to bootstrap your startup, I had to complement income from consulting services doing software audits, acting as an expert witness and suffering from irrational and many times, unfair deals with customers and partners.

As an example, in our prior incubator, we were misled to invest in a fiber deal, that almost left the company bankrupt but we managed to survive and stay afloat.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about EGLA COMMUNICATIONS – what should we know?
The business is more of an intellectual property shop, where we build new and innovative products by ourselves or with others thru our incubator. Our incubation philosophy is more of a libertarian, do what you can, and there are no rules, but make money and stay afloat. There is no need to raise capital or be successful with Series A or B, bootstrap your business with your own capital and, we will try as much as possible to find deals.

We are proud of our patented products. for example Mobile CAD is used by many phone manufacturers to make high-tech phones and devices, our patents cover functionality found in 4G/LTE handoff which is used by all phones when you drive around with your car and switch cells. Cloud to Cable TV is an innovative patented product that merges the worlds of Cloud and Cable TV. Also, we assist other companies with Mobile CDS, SafeFI and many more.

Our specialty is picking up an idea, turn it into a prototype, evaluate its intellectual property value, protect it, launch it and seek for licensing deals.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
