Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto and Sara Conceicao.
Alberto and Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When we met in February of 2005 we knew pretty much instantly that we were meant to teach capoeira together for a living. We had a shared passion for capoeira and a joined mission to spread Capoeira throughout our community. A year later we began to build our own group in Boynton Beach, teaching evening classes at local gyms and studios while maintaining our day jobs. We taught consistently for almost 6 years having fun teaching capoeira and introducing the culture of the Brazilian Martial Art to people of all ages in Boynton Beach. By 2011 our student base had grown so much that we felt confident and excited to take the plunge – quit our other jobs, open our own studio, and give ourselves 100% to our passion. We stayed for 5 years at our first studio, where we began to implement more components to what we offer such as day camp and after school pick up, in addition to our adults and kids regular classes. We continued to grow so much that we found it necessary to expand to a larger location, and in January of 2017 we re-located to a beautiful new studio more than double the size of our first location. We are enjoying the benefits of doing what we love while being surrounded by an amazing team of staff and family that enables us to just keep growing and enriching the lives of more and more people through capoeira. Everything happened naturally, while we were just following our hearts and our dream. We are very blessed to be where we are today, and thankful for the Capoeira in our lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although we feel grateful for all the success we have had along the way, we have definitely faced several challenges. Our journey to where we are now has happened naturally, but not easily. One struggle we had was when we were outgrowing our 1st studio space and for years we were having to turn people away, which of course was difficult. (Even though it’s a great “problem” to have too much demand for what we do!) Simultaneously we were dealing with having such a full house that teaching and running our programs were more challenging with limited space. We also were having quite a struggle finding a new, bigger location that would suite our needs and our budget. When we finally found a new location that we liked, we ended up having to double pay rent for many months because of how the timing and contract worked out. (Paying for our new location even though we couldn’t move in yet, on top of all the start up costs of moving was definitely a difficult struggle). Learning all of the aspects to make a business run smoothly and successfully without any formal training or education in business has been a bit challenging at times, as well as learning the art of great customer service but at the same time maintaining true to our own values. Another challenge that is bittersweet is working with family. Working together as business partners and as husband and wife, and having our 2 children with us all the time at the studio is wonderful and at the same time difficult because we have to be vigilant about finding a balance between personal and business life, which is not always a simple task. But even though it’s not always easy, we always find a way to make it work because we know we would not want it any other way. We view all of our struggles and challenges as opportunities to learn about ourselves and each other, and grow only stronger and more united as a result.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Capoeira Karkara Cultural Arts Center Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
We are proud to say that we are the premiere Capoeira academy in Palm Beach County. We provide Capoeira classes and programs to kids and adults of all ages, after school pick up, summer camp & day camp on no-school days. We are known for providing a sense of family for our members, and striving to preserve the Brazilian Cultural Arts in Palm Beach County.
What sets capoeira apart from other martial arts and less multifaceted activities is how dynamic it is, incorporating elements of self-defense, dance, acrobatics, music, culture & fitness to the whole family. People like to come to our academy to be around good people and share good energy, to feel lifted up, confident and motivated.
We are most proud of never giving up even when the 1st few years we only had 1 or 2 people showing up in our classes we never stopped showing up consistently, because we were faithful to our mission and still are. After 12 years of working together as married couple we remain just as passionate about Capoeira and each other and our family that we are raising together practically at the academy. We are also proud of cultivating a true family over time and being an influential and supportive role to so many kids as they grow up. So many of them are our staff now, they learn Capoeira as well, and participate as a family in almost all the decisions regarding the shows and events, with us.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Capoeira as a martial art is getting more and more popular and well known all around the world, so we definitely expect the amount of successful academies in the United States to grow in the coming years, especially since we have noticed that people seem to be more and more paying attention to their physical and emotional well-being and seeking connection. Also, unfortunately as more and more disturbing violent acts occur around the world, more people are looking to be trained in techniques that will help them defend themselves if needed.
