Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Carroll.
Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My writing career started when I was in high where I worked for a Black newspaper covering amateur night at the Apollo. I then started my own booking agency called Red, Black and Green Promotions. Through my company RBG Promotions, I represented comedians like Monique, Kevin Hart, JB Smoove and Dave Chappelle. After 12 years of booking comics and various other artists, I started writing a producing my own movies. My second movie Gold Digger Killer was a hit. I then graduated to writing comics and then books. I have written over 13 sci-fi and horrors books produced six movies and ten comics and counting.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
RBG Promotions booked mostly college shows and after 9-11 colleges changed their formats. Then social media dried up the rest of the market. My film career looked real promising, but after a $25K investment into my second movie Gold Digger Killer it grossed over a quarter million dollars the distribution company filed for bankruptcy and I never received my guarantee. Writing books and comics are not that difficult they take a long time to make the money back. Thanks to Kickstarter and the quarantine, what used to take a year to make a profit in a comic it only takes 30 days.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I try to think of big and deeper science fiction questions to answer in my stories. I also try to write some resolutions in my stories. I have a high humor aptitude and try to incorporate it into my stories as best I can. I have problems choosing a work of my that I am most proud of. Each of my books, comics and film have a special place in my heart. My first film Holla If I Kill You is still amazing however, Gold Digger Killer and my last film The Black Nun are my most talked about films. I love all of my books, but I think The Harlem Shake because it is a series is a special place in my heart. I wrote to encourage Black and brown people to get into disaster preparation. My comic FangerNails is a work that I am most proud of because it is the first comic I wrote with my own universe.
Overall I tell people I have an L Ron Hubbard complex because I want to write fiction so well people believe it is real.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I used to be a civil rights activist. I have worked with scholars like City College professor Dr. Leonard Jeffires and coordinated marches with Reverend Al Sharpton. I studied in Egypt with the great Egyptologist Dr. Ben while in college. The only music video I was in was Stop the Violence with KRS ONE.
