Community Highlights: Meet Pamela Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Thompson.

Hi Pamela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For far too long, taking those monthly, or in desperation, weekly trips to the beauty supply store became a tiresome chore. However, when I decided to transition from relaxed hair to natural in 2000, it was difficult to find a beauty supply store that catered to my unique needs. But is it really that difficult? Obviously, there is more than one type of woman that shop in those stores. So, why should I continue to wait for these stores to realize the need to diversify? Therefore, in 2018, I decided to challenge the status quo by creating the ultimate beauty supply experience for women of color. Let’s face it, hair products, like garments, are NEVER one size fits all.

And no one knows this better than women of color. Women who find themselves walking down endless aisles of beauty products that only target select races. To her, hair is more than just a mane that needs to be groomed just because. It’s a way of life… a symbol of identity… a symbol of her love and grace. That’s why our curated collection of hair care, skincare, and beauty products are inspired by this diversity. My Shade & Texture offers: •Knowledgeable Beauty Curators •Recognize & value YOU as a woman of color •Offer product samples •Donate unused products to women and children in need •Diverse products with your SHADE & TEXTURE in mind •Free hair care consultations in our on-site salon, Wash + Glow Bar.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my first year of business, I encountered several obstacles, from leaving a 10-year career during the midst of Covid-19 to operating during a local protest after the death of George Floyd. We were less than a mile from where a gas station was set afire. Although the nearby looting was scary, overall, the protests had actually brought more community members into my store to help monitor the shop or keep me company. These hurdles only pushed us to pivot and adjusted to an everchanging atmosphere.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
