The Journey of Backyard and Pergolas
The Spark of Inspiration
Backyard and Pergolas was born out of a passion for design and a deep understanding of architecture. As an architect from Venezuela with a master’s degree in sustainable architecture and energy efficiency from Universitat La Salle in Barcelona, I had a wealth of experience. My journey began in Caracas, where I owned a small firm and completed over 35 commercial projects and 20 residential projects, working with renowned companies like Adidas, Clarks, and Victoria’s Secret.
In 2016, I founded an NGO in Caracas that focused on creating public spaces using art and architecture in collaboration with local communities. This initiative was deeply fulfilling and underscored my belief in the power of design to transform environments and lives.
However, the political situation in Venezuela pushed me to seek new opportunities. My family and I moved to Bogotá, Colombia, for a year, where I worked for an NGO on a significant mosque project.
A New Beginning in the U.S.
In search of stability and better prospects, my wife Andrea, our unborn child, and I moved to the United States. The first year in Miami was challenging. I continued remote work for my firm in Caracas and collaborated with local architects but struggled to find a stable position. Despite submitting over 100 resumes, rejections were common, primarily due to my lack of a work permit.
An Idea Takes Root
Amidst these challenges, I decided to transform my backyard. Building a fence and observing the local construction methods, I realized how accessible this field was. Hiring a concrete company further inspired me as I saw potential for improvement in design and creativity. This experience ignited a desire to start a business focused on outdoor living spaces.
The Birth of Backyard and Pergolas
With my architectural background and a fresh perspective on outdoor construction, I founded Backyard and Pergolas. I documented every step of transforming my backyard, from design to execution, and shared these insights. When I presented the idea to my wife Andrea and my friend Eladio Duque, reactions were mixed. While Eladio had reservations, Andrea was more supportive. Both have been instrumental in the company’s growth from day one.
Overcoming Initial Challenges
Our journey was filled with challenges. For the first two years, I handled every aspect of the business, from building to administration and social media. Balancing work and family was tough, especially with a young son. Despite numerous mistakes and intense labor under Florida’s high temperatures, our persistence paid off.
Building a Reputation
We quickly gained clients and made a name for ourselves in Miami. However, building loyalty among our staff was difficult, with some even stealing our ideas and photos. Yet, we remained steadfast. My background as an architect and project manager, combined with Eladio’s experience as an interior designer, helped us navigate these hurdles. We worked tirelessly, often around the clock, driven by the belief that we could excel in this niche.
Achieving Success
Today, we have designed nearly 700 patios in Florida, earning a strong reputation. We’ve collaborated with actors, athletes, and influencers who have helped spread the word about our work.
Looking Ahead
Our vision is to expand further, opening more stores across Florida and eventually moving into other states. Backyard and Pergolas stands as a testament to perseverance, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in outdoor living spaces.

Initial Struggles
The transition from Venezuela to the United States was fraught with difficulties. Despite my extensive experience and qualifications, securing stable employment in Miami was challenging, primarily due to my lack of a work permit. Over 100 resumes were submitted, resulting in 95 rejections. This period was characterized by uncertainty and financial strain.
Starting from Scratch
Deciding to start a new business in a foreign country was daunting. Transforming my backyard was the first step, but it required significant effort, learning, and adaptation to new construction methods. Convincing my partner and wife of the viability of this new venture was another hurdle, as they were understandably skeptical.
Balancing Roles and Responsibilities
For the first two years, I wore multiple hats—builder, administrator, designer, and marketer. Balancing these roles with family responsibilities, particularly with a newborn, was incredibly challenging. Working around the clock, often in the intense heat of Florida, took a physical and emotional toll.
