Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Sawyer.
Hi Crystal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started learning how to play the harp after I graduated from high school. It was not long before I was performing for special events. After I graduated, I became a music educator with MDCPS where my career was over 20 years. These days, I run my own academy where I center students of BIPOC communities in a harp positive space.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many challenges. There are so many different roles that I have to fulfill. From networking to marketing there is always something to do. Fundraising is an area that requires constant attention in addition to regular students. There is a lot to do and process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I teach beginning harp to students of BIPOC communities. Last year July, I was able to facilitate a harp ensemble workshop for beginners. Students were able to explore new repertoire in a content studio. Parents felt connected to a larger harp community and saw the movement for what it really was. Representation is very important and it makes a true difference.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The cello is my favorite instrument.
