Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Yi-Hernandez.
Adrian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a very early age, I always remember having a magnetism for music. It’s something that I not only process sonically but viscerally as well. I get actual sensations in my physical body when I listen to music and depending on the vibe (the actual frequencies) I can literally feel it in different places. This unique relationship with music has grown over the years — to the extent that I am currently perusing my dreams of being a full time singer/songwriter, vocal engineer and independent artist.
I started dabbling with song recording and music production circa 2016, where I began to upload short demos onto SoundCloud. After gaining more confidence, I eventually started uploading to YouTube and ultimately decided to distribute independently to streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.
As a fairly new (and niche) up-and-coming artist in the underground Miami scene, I am looking forward to getting out of my comfort zone and to start performing live at different venues in the city. I am also hoping to collaborate with other local recording artists and to keep making bangers.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
To quote my favorite artist (and muse) Lana Del Rey: “Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough, I don’t know why.”
It’s been a long and tumultuous road if I’m being completely honest. A lot of internal struggles with doubt, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, etc. along with being clinically treated for a mood disorder is challenging to say the least. But I feel like my pain isn’t in vain, in fact, being able to write about some of my experiences with mental health issues has given me a renewed sense of purpose for public awareness, advocacy and education about the importance of mental health despite the stigma.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Adrian A. Yi-Hernandez (December 3, 1994) known as Angel di Amanté is an American singer-songwriter from Miami, Florida. He is an independent artist known for animated ad libs and avant-garde vocal styling. His voice registers in myriad textures and timbres. From light, ethereal crooning to edgy vocal fry, Angel’s sound is eclectically nuanced. Recognized by his stark use of autotune & vocoder harmonies, Angel has engineered a notably iconic sound that is both whimsical and otherworldly. Likened to a “cosmic siren” his voice is alluring yet alien. Though certainly experimental, Angel’s exact genre is undefined. Though his early projects started out with a shoegaze feel (2022-23), his music has quickly evolved and transfigured into a niche of its own. As a songwriter, many of the themes and motifs Angel draws upon are of a metaphysical nature e.g. “is it all inside my head,” Angel dwells on the nature of duality and the unity of opposites. Angel vulnerably lyricizes about his mental health struggles and subsequent substance abuse as “self-medicating.” He states that singing and song writing are his “greatest coping mechanisms” for dealing with the “angst of existence.”
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the courage to keep going and moving forward no matter what. It is fierce resilience and determination.
