Community Highlights: Meet David Fuller aka DJ Dave Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Fuller aka DJ Dave Jordan.

Hi David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Miami, Fla. I always had a love for music growing up and at the age of fourteen, I became interested in DJing, even while playing football, basketball, and running track. I would make and sell mixtapes as a way to pay for new records. I enjoyed listening to DJs like Jazzy Jeff, Jam Master Jay, Mr. Mixx, Magic Mike, Terminator X, and a few others. I refer to myself as a culinary mixmaster, because I use a variety of genres and blends for my mixes. Which was influenced by the style of Philly and New York DJs.

After graduating from high school, I decided to enter the U.S. Air force. My military career became my primary focus and DJing was put on a back burner, but my love for it and music never left. In 1995, I started getting the itch of getting back into it, but a lot in the terms of the equipment had changed. I learned mixing with two turntables, two-channel mixers, and vinyl records but was beginning to see CD mixing by the time 1998/99 came around. Which I wasn’t a fan of even with the evolution of CDJs.

Fast forward to 2009, I came across an all-in-one Numark midi controller that gave you everything you needed to DJ using audio files. For the small price of $200, I could get back into something I truly enjoyed. That turned out to be the spark I needed, but I had to get back up to speed with DJ culture. Like a perfect storm, a new school founded by DJ Jam Master Jay of RUN DMC had opened a Miami location. Scratch DJ Academy was the ideal place for me to rekindle my love for DJing. I was able to resharpen my skills and learn about new tech, and software.

Back in the Saddle. In 2010 I started mobile DJing for private parties, small weddings, and retirements. Then I found out about livestreaming. So I started channels on Mixlr.com and Mixcloud.com and began broadcasting mixes. I started gaining followers and to my surprise one was an old friend and fellow veteran of mine, Tavaron Marshall. He just so happened to be looking for a resident DJ for a new internet radio station that he was a part of. He contacted me and asked if I would be interested in joining Insanely Gifted Radio. The station is owned by Todd Engle and based in Austin, Texas.

Brick by Brick. I was given two time slots for my weekly show called The Midweek Mix. I also provided most of the mixes for another station show, Da Midnight Ryde. My role with Insanely Gifted Radio quickly grew from just being the Resident DJ to also programming shows, recruiting other DJs, and co-hosting another show on the station called Movies N Ya Mouf. Over the next three years, I would fly out to Austin to DJ several station events, see my mix show get syndicated on two other stations, and get nominated for two Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA) back to back.

A Brand New Funk. On October first, I decided to take things to the next level and start my internet radio station. Independent Global Radio Miami (IGRMiami) was born. The mission is to have a platform designed for DJs by DJs. Offering DJs the ability to freely play and create a different experience for listeners. I also have a show that supports independent artists. Things have been going well so far. I even held a DJ contest (Master of the Mix) that was well-received by fellow DJs and listeners. So the plan is to continue to grow and build the station and hopefully make IGRMiami a household name.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I really can’t say that there have been any challenges other than time management. My time is consumed by so many things and it can feel like a non-stop rollercoaster. So far I’ve done a good job of it, but I always feel it can be done better.

We’ve been impressed with IGRMiami (Independent Global Radio Miami), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
IGRMiami is a DJ driven station. As a DJ, I know that most if not all radio stations don’t allow DJs to play what they would like too.

On IGRMiami DJs are free to play any genre and be as creative as they want too. I feel that listeners miss out on a lot of good music and artist that mainstream stations probably won’t play. IGRMiami also supports independent artists across the globe by allowing them to submit their music for airplay on our Open Mic Night show.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.?
I don’t look at things as good or bad luck.  Opportunities come your way.

The question is what do you do with those opportunities? I feel that most of my choices have worked out for me. If you learn to live your decisions and try to improve on things that you can control, you can achieve some of the things you want to do with the proper commitment.
