Meet Gustavo Olivieri of Gustavo Olivieri Antiques

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Olivieri.

Gustavo, a native of Argentina, arrived in Miami, Florida in 1995 hoping to use his architectural background and training. His first design position in the US was with Island Outpost Hotels and famed interior designer and business woman, Barbara Hulanicki. Some of his best work can still be seen at The Marlin Hotel where the rock band U2 recorded several albums and The Tides Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach.

In 1999, he moved to Washington D.C. to serve as lead design consultant in a major remodel of a favorite local night spot in DC’s famed Dupont Circle neighborhood. After its completion, he returned to Miami ready to be his own boss and open his own showroom.

Gustavo Olivieri Antiques in Miami became an instant success, creating the need to launch a new showroom in New York City and the Hamptons, Manhattan’s elite beach destination. Design firms, celebrities and the world’s wealthy arrived at his continually expanding showrooms in Miami and New York.

Has it been a smooth road?
The retail and Internet business has had its ups and downs over the near 20 years that we have been in business. My philosophy during leaner economic times has been to better serve the luxury market and sophisticated clientele that appreciate the value of top designer furniture and lighting. By always acquiring the high-end collector pieces that they search for, we remain a destination for those designers seeking something special.

Navigating the vintage furnishings and antiques market has also been a struggle. You would have to be able to read the future to know what people are looking for as tastes change and evolve. My avant-garde ability to select items that perhaps are not yet market ready has garnered me the title of “taste-maker” by many of my top clients.

Most important, I attributed much of my success to my partner/husband, Joel Perez, who joined in 2005 to help build the business as it was growing so fast that it required his most trusted ally in life and business. Together we balance each other out perfectly while Joel keeps track of the business side of things, I am freed up to be the creative resource that has made Gustavo Olivieri Antiques a great place to shop.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gustavo Olivieri Antiques – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Gustavo Olivieri Antiques specializes in designer Italian and French furniture and lighting. Of course, we love all the top American designers such as Paul Evans, Karl Springer and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. Our reputation for having great lighting has brought clients from all over the world.

We are most proud of the success of our stores and the expansion to the New York City market. It was a natural extension of our East Hampton showroom. I believe Gustavo Olivieri Antiques is the only vintage and antique furnishings dealer with retail showrooms in these important markets. We serve the clientele of wealth and refined taste in all the places where they want to shop!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Miami is wonderful! We call it home because it continues to create new boundaries of style and taste.

Art Basel Miami Beach is probably the BEST example of why Miami is becoming the art capital of the Americas. In particular, the diversity of the Latin American cultures in Miami and the affluence and education that they bring to the city has established Miami as a true “new frontier.”

The only thing that is hard to deal with in Miami is the Summer heat, hot hot hot!
