Art & Life with Valia Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valia Gonzalez.

Valia, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Born and raised in Havana, Cuba. I graduated from the National School of Ballet of Havana; I danced for six years at Ballet Nacional de Cuba as a soloist. I left Cuba in 1997 to join the Compañia Nacional de Danza of Mexico City. In 2002, I arrived in the United States and danced for Ballet Florida. Brazarte Dance Company and Cuban Classical Ballet. In 2013, I became part of the Miami City Ballet School faculty as a ballet, and European Character dances teacher. In 2016, moved by my extreme passion and dedication for dance, I founded Miami Cuban Ballet School. My goal is to transmit the passion, discipline, and love for dancing. As an educator, choreographer, and artist my aim is to encourage my students to achieve their full potential as dancers. My most cherished desire is to teach the young generation of artists with compassion, love, and dedication so they may take pride in the fruition of their hard work in dance, as with all other aspirations.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am the director of the Miami Cuban Ballet School; I teach students of all ages to achieve their dreams as dancers. I teach them not only how to become better dancers but also to be passionate, disciplined, and committed to this art form. I strongly believe these qualities make young students become better dancers and better human beings as well.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
The role of real artists have always been to transmit emotions and to move audiences. Nowadays, technology is helping reach out to audiences in a faster and more effective way.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Miami Cuban Ballet School presents every year the full production of “The Nutcracker” at The Seminole Theatre. This is a brand new production filled with spectacular scenery, colorful costumes, and fascinating characters. A family holiday tradition, perfect for celebrating the season. Children and adults will be captivated as Clara and her beloved Nutcracker battle a Mouse King, travel through a magical snow forest and enter the Land of Sweets.
