Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilio Martinez.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story began as a child in Honduras being raised without a mother or father. Moving constantly within my country and eventually to the United States. This gave me the opportunity to learn from the different people and their culture nurturing my work.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a mixed media artist. I work in the field of painting, sculptures, and installations. My work is composed of hybrid creatures living in an imaginary perfect world. My characters have no nationality, race or society standards that divide them. Instead, they are presented as equal and beautiful in their own reality. My message is my own experience and perception of what is beauty and freedom. Im a journalist who is telling my story, that it’s the story of many. My dream is for my work to be preserved for future generations.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
My idea of what is an artist is that we are to be the newspapers of our times. We are to speak the truth without being compromised by anything. We are receptors, and everything that happens around us, good or bad will be present in our work.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Im part of a traveling exhibition titled Visionary Aponte. It was first presented in the Little Haiti cultural center in Miami making its way to NYU, Duke University after. It is now going to the Caribbean, Europe and finally coming back to the states to be presented at Harvard University among other places.
