Meet Joann Veger of Nobe Yoga in North Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joann Veger.

Joann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am not gonna go too way back, but I moved to Miami in 1998 from a beautiful Dutch Caribbean island called Curacao,

I started off as a GO GO dancer in the clubs and then from there went into Fitness industry (personal training), I always had a passion for fitness, even as a child I was always outdoors running and playing climbing and swimming, so naturally personal training was the Job direction for me, create my own hours and be free. Anyway, My Nobe Yoga story starts like this.

Couple years back, when I was doing personal training for a living, my best friend at the time introduced me to this amazing businessman who was in search of a Personal Trainer, I started training him almost daily, while I was training him he taught me a lot about business and yoga, anyway long story short he needed a personal assistant and asked me if I would like the job since he felt he could trust me, I was hesitant but gave in.

I learned so much that year from taxes to revenues to accounting (mind you I was so bad at this subject in school) to yoga even, I started getting a passion for it and when he was looking for somebody to open up his Yoga Studio with he knew he had a good student that he trained well, so I took the challenge, now here I am Directing one of the best Yoga studios in town NOBE YOGA. But you must now that…

I come from such a fitness, cross-fit, bootcamp and spinning world that Yoga at first was like noway never in a million years this is too slow for me… but I gave it a try, my client told me it was the best thing he ever did, and it helps him with his creativity, and over all mental health, so I said “why not I guess it won’t hurt” so I started doing it and noticed such a difference in my cross- fit performance.

My mobility was much more better, (mind you I am not the most flexible person in the world and always taught you need to be flexible to do yoga, but that is not the case at all) and then slowly I fell more and more in love with it, I quickly realized that spiritually it lifted me up and helped me deal with stress and anxiety.

So I quickly decided that if I was to run a yoga studio and enhance my own practice I should be a certified teacher and so I went on that journey to get my hours and become a certified yoga instructor. Once I had all my ducks in a row, I felt ready to take over the task of fully Directing Nobe Yoga.

I love what I do, and I have such passion for this studio it’s my baby and the fact that I am spreading yoga out to the masses just makes me sleep with a smile on my face.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No it was not a smooth road at all, everything is nice in theory but once put to practice you realize quickly how much work you must put into things, it’s not just opening up a studio and POOF all good.

There were many sleepless nights many mistakes made, but the biggest challenge was self-doubt!!!! Thinking that I wasn’t capable and that I took to much I can handle.
