Meet Camila Gonzalez of LuxiFit Studio in Little Havana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Gonzalez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Camila. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Although settled and comfortable in an established career for over 13 years, working for a very prestigious company, I finally got the courage to leap out of my comfort zone and set an example for my daughter. Graduating high school with the fire of dancing and performing in my blood, I opted for the financially-safer route and enrolled to major in nursing school and minor in dance. Nursing was something I “could fall back on if dancing didn’t work out.” While in college I was part of two dance companies, Higher Ground Entertainment and Body Image and was traveling as a backup-dancer for the talented singer Eyra Gail. I was teaching Jazz to aspiring dancers ages 3-18 at Brooke & Krysten’s Ballet Academy and Pro-Ballet Dance Studio. I obtained my bachelor degree in nursing and was one class away from getting a minor in dance. I was very blessed to be trained and hired to work as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit registered nurse for Baptist Children’s Hospital right after college.

However, that one dance class for my dance minor degree went by the waste-side. I gave up all dancing with the hectic life of a night-shift RN, working for two hospitals. Although being a nurse was very rewarding, something was missing. Three years into nursing I realized the void came from the lack of fulfilling my passion of dance. At that point I became a Zumba Instructor which gave me the opportunity to create choreographies, teach and change people’s life in a completely different way. I continued to live the double life as a full-time NICU nurse and teaching 2-4 Zumba classes per week.

Until I was blessed again to have been promoted in my nursing career. This nursing position soon became very demanding and I gave up dancing, once again. When life became monotonous, I leaped back into dancing. When dancing opportunities would fall on my lap, life would get complicated and I would have to make the “grown up” decision to focus on my priorities. Until I was blessed with the birth of my daughter and the divine opportunity to walk away from my nursing career to follow my dream of opening my dance and fitness studio. In addition, I was blessed to have my husband and family who backed me up in my decisions amd all along my journey with the creation of our studio. The simultaneity of events, I believed, was a sign. I knew I was on the right path as my goal was to be an example for my daughter. I want her to live her dreams, follow her passion and not settle to work on a career that is “safe.” I realized that  nothing is ever “safe,” when working for someone else, much less owning your own company. But, I figured that since we spend the majority of our days working, we might as well spend those days doing what we absolutely love so others can benefit from that love we are providing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Days seem short to accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Budget is tight.

Please tell us about LuxiFit Studio.
Our studio provides dance classes and fitness classes (including Zumba) with heart rate monitoring for optimal fitness results.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not sure. I’ve learned and grown with every mistake.
