Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Harrison.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My father started the company in 2007 while I was attending Florida State University. I remember helping select our logo and touring the original warehouse right after AccuDock was opened, but as a college kid, I didn’t put a lot of thought into the business or what it could/has become. Two years later, I graduated with a Business Real Estate degree and had little interest in working for my father. After some thoughts and realizing the South Florida real estate market wasn’t very good, we agreed I would come to work on a trial basis. It didn’t take more than a few days to get hooked.
Looking back now almost 8 years later, the business is thriving and it’s because of the great working relationship I have with my father. We are usually in agreement on decisions and projects and which direction we want to go in on various topics. We have had a tremendous amount of help from several key employees that are truly like family. We have also had some luck along the way – but I tend to believe if you put in the work and effort – you build your own luck.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Early in my AccuDock career, it was an eye-opening shock of finance 101. With the company still in the beginning stages, there were several difficult times when it came to money – We took on some projects we shouldn’t have and it cost us, we struggled finding good material suppliers which cost us, we weren’t operating with any efficiency. It hasn’t always been an easy journey and I wouldn’t expect it to ever be, but that’s what makes it enjoyable. Finding good employees is extremely difficult, and John and I both agree that keeping the good ones happy is one of the most important duties.
Please tell us about AccuDock.
AccuDock is a floating dock and aluminum gangway material supplier. We source all USA produced raw materials and build everything in house for a true Made in America product. We are extremely diverse in what type of applications we can offer our floating docks for, and we don’t shy away from custom work. I believe this is what gives us a real advantage from any competitors is that we are capable of providing the best solution for the customer’s needs instead of just a solution. We have a really good niche market in the rowing community due to our fabrication processes and ability to provide a very low freeboard which is important for the sport of rowing. We have provided the docking at several major rowing venues, including the 2016 Olympic venue in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. As a company I am most proud of the team that we have. Everyone is on the same page and no one settles with complacency which helps us continue to improve and grow.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our ability and willingness to take on custom projects whether it is aluminum fabricated or building unique floatation. To my knowledge, we are the only company that builds our own floatation in house not using some kind of mold. That process allows us to easily customize in depth or shapes that other companies just cannot do. We recently supplied 20 float sections that measured 5’ x 8’ x 8’ deep to provide floatation for a state power company that needed to float more than 200,000 pounds. On the opposite end of that example, we can produce float sections with very short profile that are popular among water sport activists. Not only do we take on and adapt to custom projects, but we do so in a strategic manner and always succeed with happy customers in the end.
