Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantal Lue.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Colourful Illusions in the summer of 2016. During that time, the racial climate in America was very tense with the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile surfacing. I saw how it was taking a toil on my loved ones, and decided that I wanted to create something that could serve as a beacon of inspiration; focus on the positive things going on, rather than dwelling on the negative the media was portraying. I started out just sharing inspirational stories of family and friends, but after seeing how well it was received, I branched out and began finding stories in different communities.
Has it been a smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I faced was dealing with my own fears and insecurities. Branching out on your own and starting your own business, you always think “what if?” What if this doesn’t work out? What if no one likes it?What if I fail? But I had to believe in myself and my vision, and have confidence in my work. My faith helped out a lot. I had to put my trust in God and understand that He wouldn’t steer me wrong.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Colourful Illusions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So Colourful Illusions is a digital platform that highlights positive stories in the Black community. During each season, I produce weekly episodes featuring different people, organizations or events that reflect the good going on in the world. I’m most proud of the reaction I get with each episode. I’m humbled that I am able to spread some joy and make others feel special.
Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
The quality I feel is most important to my success is having an inquisitive mind. I’m always on the hunt for new stories, so being attentive to my surroundings and what’s going on in the community.
